Hi,
After recent system upgrades I've got a big problem - I cannot log out or turn off/reboot my computer on my user account anymore. There's also no system sound during login, but I can still play music. On the other hand I have no problem with switching to another user and I can suspend/hibernate my machine. I've removed the entire .kde directory (first thing I did actually). No luck, so it might not be even a KDE issue. It looks like some sort of permission problem. All other accounts work fine. All users are in more or less the same groups. Any ideas? It's a real nuisance :(
My system: Kubuntu Karmic Koala x64, KDE 4.4

Try removing /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER, /tmp/kde-$USER and /tmp/ksocket-$USER outside KDE.

This possibly may be an issue with ConsoleKit.

Try running ck-list-sessions and see if your broken user is listed when they are logged in.

I get something like that:
Session21:
unix-user = '1000'
realname = '(null)'
seat = 'Seat1'
session-type = ''
active = TRUE
x11-display = ':0'
x11-display-device = '/dev/tty7'
display-device = ''
remote-host-name = ''
is-local = TRUE
on-since = '2010-02-18T07:47:18.403559Z'
login-session-id = '4294967295'
Looks ok.

Is this after you have rebooted following the update to 4.4?

If it isn't, you may be experiencing an issue with newer components being incompatible with the older KSMServer. As a result, you will need to forcibly kill your session by running "killall -2 ksmserver"

Hello,

I have the same problem. For me it seems to be a problem with the sytemsounds,
if I deactivate them shutdown work.

You are right Thies. Disabling sound notifications allowed me to log out. Strange thing is that only one user seems to be affected.

Sound notifications should definitely have not been able to cause that. Please file a bug report.

Hi,
I had the same problem with no shutdown and not be able to logout after a system crash
but I have a solution ;D :
Just create a new user with admin permission(may be normal user is enough) and reboot your system.
Now everything works again.

best regards
Willi
