A smaller "Show Desktop" widget?

Thu Feb 18, 2010 7:33 am
Currently, I have the big blue desktop picture widget titled "show the desktop" on my taskbar. Is there any other widgets that are smaller than this one? The Windows 7 desktop button works good and its almost invisible as it doesnt take up much room. Anything similar for my KDE taskbar?

Thanks for any help or ideas!

Not that I know of, but feel free to submit it as an idea in the brainstorm :)

Panel widgets cannot be resized unfortunately.

One option is to do it without a widget at all. Find the "Global keyboard shortcuts" in system-settings, choose KWin as KDE component, and find "Show desktop". Now, setup whatever keyboard-combination you'd like (or mouse for that matter) to show the desktop.

Takes very little space :)

I could just make a widget for this. Can anyone point me where the widgets are stored on the comp? Just browsing around with hidden files viewable I cant seem to find anything. THX!

Here scripted widgets are stored in ~/.kde4/share/apps/plasma/plasmoids/. Binary plasmoids are usually installed system-wide by your package manager.

By the way, did you know that you can use your pager (the widget which shows your virtual desktops) to show your desktop? Right click on pager -> Pager Settings -> Selecting current desktop: Shows desktop.

I only got this far... ~/.kde4/share/apps/ as I must not have any plasmoids installed? I dont see the /plasma/plasmoids directory. I think I can make some apps for KDE no prob if I can get a hold of some apps and read through the code. I used to program several widgets for yahoo widgets.

I've started using the screen edge stuff to show my desktop now. This was new in 4.4 I think. You can set up a corner or edge to show desktop or tile apps. This is really useful, and a wonderful addition, IMHO.

You can create KDE Plasma Widgets with Javascript!
Please checkout

If you also want a GUI to be able to develop more smoothly and don't mind some rough edges, check out Plasmate, which works pretty well besides being at its first alpha release.

That's one cool trick. Instead on an extra icon on the panel, users can just use the pager as the "icon" :D

Thank you for this.
