Stop 4.4 from auto-sorting my desktop icons?

Hey!

Right-click Desktop --> Sort Icons: Nothing is enabled/checked
Cachew --> Folder View Activity Settings --> Sorting: Unsorted
(same place) Arrangement: AH! There is no option for "Never Arrange".

The only options are for them being along one of the four screen edges.

I can put my icons somewhere, but if I create something new on my Desktop, all my icons get lined up along the left side with Folders being first (even though Folders first is *DIS*-abled) and alphabetically after that (again, disabled).

Please, is there some way to stop KDE (SC) 4.4 from moving my Desktop icons? Locking Icons doesn't work, they still get lined up along the left side.

Thank you.
M.

P.S.
Just to say it, I've been using KDE since around 0.8 or 0.9. In addition, I can get "under the hood" and play with rc files if needed. I've already looked at plasma-desktoprc and plasma-desktop-appletsrc. I see where it's being set as the config GUIs say they should be, but is there something that can be typed in? Ya know, like having close buttons on Konq's tabs. That can be typed in.

Same thing happens to me on two computers. If I arrange my icons on the desktop the way I want them then say I create a folder, boooooooom, all the icons realign onto the left hand side of the monitor. I've check everything as well.

Another thing is that I lost my sound with this last update. It worked beautifully before. Now KDE gives me a message at start up telling me the sound isn't working...obviously.

Can you please make sure that a backend is available in System Settings > Multimedia > Backends?
Also, make sure the appropriate output is at the top of the preference list.
Please make sure that Pulseaudio is not installed...

Xine and gstreamer. Preferring either makes no difference.

This worked before kde 4.4 and now it does not.

And that annoying icon sorting is starting to get to me.

Please try removing /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/libphonon/ outside KDE.

Makes no difference. I removed all the kdecache folders from /var/tmp. I logged back into KDE desktop. I created a folder and boom, all the icons shifted to align to the left side of the screen.

I can't remove pulseaudio. One of my computers has pulseaudio running. In settings xine and gstreamer are there. That one has sound.

Though it has sound it also has the issue with the icon aligning to the left side of the screen when a new folder is created. And it happens on a 3rd computer as well. It didn't happen on any of them prior to 4.4.

Filing a bug report generally results in this: 1) someone says closing it because it can't be verified. So, 2) someone says that they can verify it. So, 3) Someone says they are closing it because not enough information. 4) The next 6 months to a year we get emails telling us that it has been verified closing anyway, bug something or the other (which almost never applies to it) is already in the works with a fix, etc.

And, another question, now that I verified the pulseaudio on the other machine. Yes, it is there as I said...and sound works...gstreamer and xine are present, it has kde 4.4, it has the align icon problem, and in looking at system monitor is has like 50 kio_http entries taking 16mb of ram each. When I terminate them a few come back, even though no browser is open and I'm not doing anything on the web.

This is a 4.4.0 regression bug, fixed in 4.4.1 : https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=227157

I suggest checking your installation regarding the Phonon problem then. It is probable that their is a broken ABI issue preventing it from functioning.

Hopefully those of you trying to get this thread closed have read more than just the first post. There are other problems here too, such as sound. Since this isn't a bug tracking forum and multiple questions are often asked in one thread, can you guys address the other problems, some of which are serious such as the sound issue.

When is 4.4.1 due out? These errors present a very bad light on KDE. It would be nice that you get them addressed immediately and get an update out right away.

Sorry, but I'm used to working on the bugtracker :)

Note that you introduced the sound problem in the third post.. may be the topic title should modified to include your problem or the problem should be addressed in other forum post (just to keep things clean and ordered). I don't mean to be rude, but I like to be tidy :)

KDE SC 4.4.1 is going to be released on March 2nd (it was tagged today)

I can't help you too much about the sound problem, sorry

Hi,

I'm the original author of this thread. I'm not having a sound issue (actually 4.4 fixed the one I was have prior...). With the icon issue fixed (in 4.4.1), I can't say that keeping this thread open is a good idea as it's about an Icon issue, not a sound issue. I am sorry to the person with the sound issue, but, I personally feel a new thread addressing that topic seperatly would be the best choice.

The sound issue is with pulse audio and KDE 4.4 having conflicts with it. Removing pulse will solve the problem for most. There are a large number of other bugs, some of which are just annoying others which are more extreme. I have 8-13 Linux boxes KDE 4.x. All of the main ones I use that were upgraded to 4.4 have the icon sort issue. Two of my 3 main machines have no issues with sound including the one I use as my TV computer, so that's good luck for me. But my main desktop that I use for everything personal has the audio problem and the only solution I could find was to remove pulse (something I really didn't want to do) especially considering this was an issue caused by the upgrade from kde 4.3.5 to 4.4. Let's just say that it really isn't acceptable to screw up something so central to computing today. I have to say that Win7 is looking really nice and, hence, mistakes like this really shouldn't happen in light of that.

And, I came in here because I had the same issue with the icon sort, and in support of my view that this is something wrong with the update, I decided to list other issues, most specifically the one having to do with sound.

I think this bug is back again. Also, I request that all the threads relating to this bug for the last five years get merged into a single thread to reduce the number of google hyperlinks users have to click while trying to fix this problem.
