KDE 4.4. I choose powersaving profile named "presentation", turn off my powersaving features of monitor and try to play SMplayer.

Since KDE 4.4 SMPlayer cannot disable screensaver, so I had to change power management profile.

In some time (10-30) minutes, screen of my monitor goes blank. Monitor does not turn off, but the screen become blank. This is very annoying while watching some video.

I can confirm your issue. I have it too. When I submitted that they told me to make a feature request, LoL. I don't want KDE to manage my power ever, for any reason, specifically due to the fact that I use the computer and monitor things on the screen over time, such as doing virus scans of mounted NTFS volumes. Having the screen go blank doesn't make me happy as I have to move from machine to machine to bring the screen back. Do the KDE people realize we use our computers for work related stuff too?

@pavel: In KDE 4.3, did you use the screen power management KCM? ( This was removed in 4.4 as it caused conflicts with the much more powerful powerdevil ). If so, try under a new user.

@jimbo99: KDE is also used on a ever increasing number of laptops, which need a power manager for optimum battery life. It doesn't harm to reduce the power usage of desktops either.

I do not know, I just used it :)

I have created new user in KDE (deleted all the files in ~/.kde4 and ~/.kde of my guest account) and tried to test "Presentation" PowerDevil schema. I left my computer alone. I had blank screen (monitor remained on) in 37 minutes (may be - earlier).

If you deactivate PowerDevil, is the screen turned off? ( System Settings > Advanced > KDE Services, Select PowerDevil, and stop )

I deactivated PowerDevil. Current power schema was "Performance". In some time (30 minutes) the monitor was off (in stand by mode with blinking power led).

I activated PowerDevil, changed the power schema to "Presentation" and deactivated PowerDevil back. In 20 minutes, sreen became blank. Monitor have not turned off (or stand by).

Can you please check to see if any other power management system is running on the system?

I can, of course... but I do not know how to do it :) Please, tell me how to... And I should... :)

I use only KDE. The behavior was tested on only one user with clear KDE profile logged in on KDE. No other users logged on.

On openSUSE 11.2 no alternate power managers should be running, since PowerDevil is used. Additionally, PowerDevil detects other managers and disables itself if they are active.

Can you please run the following command with PowerDevil disabled to see if it is actually offline? It should return nothing.

Code: Select all
qdbus org.kde.kded /kded loadedModules | grep power

If it returns something, then please run:

Code: Select all
qdbus org.kde.kded /kded unloadModule powerdevil

This returns nothing. I suppose, if there are no other ideas, an bug should be reported? It becomes https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=230227

Hm, I've been experiencing this as well. Turned off powerdevil, no change. I've turned it on again and see whether I can make it behave. In the meantime thanks for the bugreport - I added to it :)

Yeah, I have enabled powerdevil again on my desktop, adjusted the performance scheme to my liking and the screen stays on (hurray!) but the screensaver does not kick in after 5 minutes!?

So back to tinkering...

I ran into the same issue on Sabayon 5.2. I found that when disabling power devil in service manager as a user it still kept running. I tried creating a new user with the same results. So I brought up Konsole and entered
kdesu systemsettings
then entered my root password in dialog box
Then disabled it in service manager as root and havent had any more problems with the unwanted power management. This may be something the devs may want to check out, And I hope this post will be useful to someone.
