I have a serious problem.
I just upgraded KDE4.3 to KDE4.4 on Kubuntu 9.10.
but now I don't have a normal desktop anymore.
I have a black background and no kicker or kickoff.
as far as I know these are all part ot plasma-desktop.
but when I try to start plasma-desktop, I get this:
Code: Select all
The program 'plasma-desktop' is currently not installed.  You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install kdebase-workspace-bin
plasma-desktop: command not found
further everything works though, I'm using firefox now and dolpin is also open.
but I would like to have them back. afterall, this is a really odd way of using KDE...

Have you tried to run the suggested command?
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install kdebase-workspace-bin

I did now.
but:
Code: Select all
foxofinfinety@DesktopPC:~$ sudo apt-get install kdebase-workspace-bin
[sudo] password for foxofinfinety:

kdebase-workspace-bin is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libgraphicsmagick3 libopenctl0 libgtlcore0
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

those didn't help.
but then I remembered something, KDE now has both a desktop and a netbook version of plasma.
so, I needed to install the package plasma-desktop separately as well.
Since Kubuntu doesn't yet officially have KDE 4.4, I used a other repository, and the repository I used didn't contain plasma-desktop nor plasma-netbook in the kde meta-package so those needed to be installed separately :<
