windows don't maximize by default

Sat Apr 03, 2010 12:37 am
I finally got my wife to let me kill the nasty bearded Gnome on her computer and install KDE! Kind of a weird problem, though... when she launches OO.o or iceweasel (the apps she uses the most) they don't maximize vertically... there's always a thin strip of desktop showing along the bottom. Native KDE apps don't have this problem, just OO.o and Iceweasel. I've been using KDE for years and never encountered this before; does anyone know what's up and how to fix it?

Make sure nothing other than the single default rule is present in System Settings > Window Behaviour > Window Specific.

Sorry for the delayed response... yes, that's the only thing in there. It's identical to the rule on my box... and I don't have that problem.

If you create a new user, does it occur there?

Interesting... no, it doesn't. It's also interesting that it's only the apps she uses constantly. Do you think it's a setting that got created while she was using Gnome?

Possibly. If you move ~/.kde to another place while outside of KDE does the issue still occur?

Yeah, it does. It's just her three favorite apps: OO.o Calc, OO.o Writer, and Iceweasel.

I think it's definitely Gnome-related... the gap looks exactly the width of the 2nd Gnome panel.

Try moving your gnome configuration directories in the same way, but do it one-at-a-time. Hidden folder with "gnome" or "gtk" in the name are what your are probably looking for.

I got rid of a few things, but I'm not sure what else to delete. Here's the contents of the directory:

Code: Select all
jess@elizabeth:~$ ls -a
.                 .cache      .dvdcss      .gksu.lock       .kde                  .openoffice.org      .themes
..                .config     .esd_auth    .gnupg           .local                .pki                 .thumbnails
.adobe            .dbus       .fontconfig  .google          .macromedia           .pulse               .viminfo
.aptitude         .debtags    .fonts.conf  .gstreamer-0.10  .mcop                 .pulse-cookie        .VirtualBox
.aspell.en.prepl  Desktop     .gconf       .gvfs            .mcoprc               .qt                  .Xauthority
.aspell.en.pws    .directory  .gconfd      .ICEauthority    Me                    .recently-used       .xine
.bash_history     .dmrc       .gegl-0.0    .icons           .mozilla              .recently-used.xbel  .xscreensaver
.bash_profile     Download    .gimp-2.6    .kaboom.log      .mozilla-thunderbird  .ssh                 .xsession-errors

Try removing ~/.gconf and ~/.gvfs also. If that doesn't work, try moving ~/.local and ~/.config elsewhere.

Okay, it's fixed. I had to redo the configuration settings for her whole damn desktop, but we're cooking with gas now.

I shoulda known better. I've tried this in the past and results have always been mixed. I'd probably have been better off wiping the hard drive and re-installing the OS.
