Hmm... interesting. The only way I found to access this mode is by opening the "Network" shortcut on the sidebar, then opening "Network", then it will show..

I'm not seeing it either.

I've just asked the writer of the userbase article that shows it. I should get an answer by tomorrow.

The author of the page http://userbase.kde.org/File_transfers has edited it to make this clearer. Unfortunately it still doesn't seem to work on my laptop, so I don't know whether it's a matter of missing packages or what.

I've found a way to get it to work, although it is not a good solution. What I did is switched to editable mode, typed in ftp.kde.org (NOT ftp://ftp.kde.org). It returns an "invalid protocol" error, clears the address bar, and shows the protocol list button. I suppose any ftp site would work, but typing a.b.c did not work.

Hmm - that doesn't seem to work here, either. I got the 'Invalid Protocol' but nothing else. Closing the error message does nothing, neither does clearing the addressline using the clear-icon on the addressline. Any idea what I might have missed? I'd like to solve this, so that we can update the userbase page as necessary (and file a bug report if it seems useful).

Cracked it! If you don't see the protocol list, click the tick as though you were returning to breadcrumb mode, and the list appears. I discovered this while actually connected via ftp, so it should work without any fancy footwork
