Just upgraded to 9.1 kubuntu from 8.04 and the screen layout / task manager is split between the bottom of the screen (where it appears OK) and the top of the screen which is mis drawn and not usable.
When I click on the K menu the menu sometimes appears where it should and sometimes at the top of the screen. Same with the file browser. Video is a 8500GS 256K. After upgrade had to upgrade the NVidia drivers (was using 190 now using 195.36.15 as screen performance was ridiculously slow. (ran mythfrontend and was taking 10 seconds to render menus). After upgrade of NVidia performance is good, but desktop still weird. Have reset the plasmic config files but still no joy. Have a screen capture, but not sure how to attach it to this post. Panel also sometimes just terminates and other times just crashes. http://omploader.org/vNDdlZg/screen.png

Please post screen captures to image hosting websites such as Omploader, then post the link to them here.

I appear to have solved the problem so thought I would post the result.
After applying some patches to see if they would fix the above I lost the desktop totally. So I looked at the logs from the original dist upgrade. Somewhere in the dist upgrade, either from Intrepid to Jaunty, or Jaunty to Karmic there was a problem. Looking in /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log there were errors about holding back packages start with Investigating mysql-client-5.1 Package mysql-client-5.1 has broken dep on mysql-client-5.0 Considering mysql-client-5.0 22 as a solution to mysql-client-5.1 19 Holding Back mysql-client-5.1 rather than change mysql-client-5.0 There were many other packages including "akonadi-server" and "kubuntu-desktop" that were not installed. When I used apt to install mysql 5.1 it removed the squeezebox server that I had installed. I then went though the upgrade log and manually installed the held back packages and my desktop would then appear but then the screen would immediately go blank. I then moved my .kde to .kdeold and logged in and everything is now working Ok, so I assume that some settings or app that was running was killing the desktop. I am sure some other packages are not running so will continue looking. |
