Hi,
It looks like native KDE apps share some shortcut framework. For instance, there's the Configure Shortcuts - Kate dialog for Kate; it shows four main entries: Find in Files, Kate, Kate Part and Konsole. How I am supposed to add my own action/shortcut isn't obvious. I want to insert a text string like "---" via a shortcut; what's the right way to manage such things? |

You can add such shortcuts in System Settings -> Input Actions: Edit -> New -> Global Shortcut -> Send Keyboard Input.

Is it the only way? Do I have warnings if I redefine an existing shortcut? |

If a key is already allocated to another application shortcut then you will recieve a dialog which informs you that they key sequence specified is in use, and gives you the option of transferring the shortcut or canceling the change.

No way to make a shortcut local to an application (Kate), or a group of applications?

I'm not sure what you could mean by a group of applications in this context. You can certainly make a shortcut that would launch an application.

By the way, I can't find any reference for keyboard input syntax. Using some obscure hints, I entered ":-:-:*. Got '--8 which is close enough, but no cigar. Is there a guide somewhere?

That's what "Window" in the Action tab is for - defining which windows the shortcut works for.

"--* will be Shift+':-:-:Shift+8 ; still, can't fugure out how the exclamation (!) and question (?) marks should be presented. Sure, there must be a syntax reference somewhere... UPD: Shift+1 and Shift+/, respectively. But still, there's a lot more obscure keys out there |

I want a syntax reference as well - remember that I looked for something like that in the KDE3 days. Maybe we could start something on Userbase as a start?
