Hi all!
I really like KDE4 much more than any other Linux desktop... but there is an issue that still makes me stick to Gnome. I don't mind about KDE's slight higher RAM usage... but my laptop's CPU fan is always on while using KDE, so battery also gets empty faster than on Gnome. I've tried to compare the results of "top" command in both desktops (freshly started, no apps opened) and I've noticed that knotify4 process is always taking 2% of CPU time (no such process on Gnome, of course). The rest of the processes look similar (though sometimes Xorg eats a lot of CPU on KDE... but it's not as constant as knotify's CPU usage). BTW, I'm using archlinux, on both KDE and Gnome. Is this a known issue? Is there something I can configure? In Arch's forums I've read about disabling sound notifications... but it sounds weird... Anyway, I've done it without success. Thanks a lot and congratulations for such a HUGE and good work. |

Which version of KDE are you using, which applications do you have running in the background and which Phonon backend are you using?

I'm currently running freshly updated ArchLinux KDE 4.4.3. However, knotify's CPU usage has been an issue for me ever since I installed KDE 4.3 (didn't use previous versions).
As for services, all default ones but nepomuk (which I've manually stopped) are running. Not sure about Phonon's default backend in Archlinux. I'll take a look at it when I get home, yet I'm sure I haven't changed the default (I think it's gstreamer, but I'm not sure) Thanks so much! EDIT: Confirmed: Phonon is using GStreamer backend ![]() |
