Does anyone know how to fix this? ~$ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. If you create a new user, can you reproduce this problem there?

Hi bcooksley,
Thanks for your reply! I created a new user, but the problem is seen only with my account. In the meanwhile i received the following working advice: ~$ mv .kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc .kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc.backup then logout login again. I had to make all the settings again, but the systray works now |

just happened to me.
i couldn't find anything weird on the file he mentioned, but removing it also fixed it for me. KDE-4.7 it was hiding every icon on the systray. such as pidgin, skype, wiicd. kde icons were fine. such as keyboard locale, kde-wifi, sound, notifications. if this is still being investigated, i have the backup file on another machine and can post here |

Are the icons simply "hidden" (meaning accessible from the up arrow, on the right most side of the system tray applet, beside the digital clock) or are they completely not shown at all?

They were not shown at all, as far as i can tell. I do not have a arrow where you describe. Default gentoo install has the bar on top and the hidden icons are in an arrow on the left of the notification area, i assume you mean that? If yes i checked it. If not i have no idea. To be honest i never touched kde since 1.something, and just moved recently because gnome3 is unusable. |

Yes, that was the same arrow. The next time somebody experiences this, please try removing the System Tray applet and adding it back in again.
