I wish I had seen your initial problem sooner. Otherwise, I gladly would have suggested this.

When using KDE 4.2.x (all of the series), this would be an every-other-reboot issue on my system. You can find the error's pop-up by clicking on the middle startup two or three times with the mouse or pressing Escape, I don't remember which exactly.

Show the error via the clicking, press OK, let it fall back to the KDM login. After chmoding/chowning /home/<user> by dropping to console (CTRL+ALT+F1), I was able to log in no problem.

But here again, I'd had this issue atleast once every two or three reboots. It was a very common problem for me. The KDE 4.3 series has yet to produce a similar result.

Just thought you'd like to know!

This problem can arise when using utilities such as KDESu or KDESudo to run applications as root.
