Somehow I started seeing this error message:
Image

when I try to move a file to Trash folder. The Trash folder is empty. Also I've enough of free disk space:

Code: Select all
ilj@sega:/home/ilj % df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda3              46G   42G  1.8G  96% /
udev                   10M  188K  9.9M   2% /dev
shm                   1.5G  1.2M  1.5G   1% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1              21G   19G  1.5G  93% /mnt/vista

What's wrong? How can I fix this issue?

Hi fellow Archer...

likely you put something as root in your trash by accident. Do an "updatedb" followed by "locate Trash" and you will see what is clogging up your system :)

hey!

The solution to my problem is the following:
Code: Select all
root@sega:/home/ilj % mv /home/ilj/.local/share/Trash ~/

The error message is bogus, though. The Trash folder did not contain any files:

Code: Select all
root@sega:/home/ilj % lsh /home/ilj/.local/share/Trash/
total 20K
drwx------  4 ilj ilj 4.0K May 11 19:18 .
drwx------ 12 ilj ilj 4.0K Apr 24 14:07 ..
drwx------  2 ilj ilj 4.0K May 11 19:18 files
drwx------  2 ilj ilj 4.0K Jun 10 14:35 info
-rw-------  1 ilj ilj   35 May 11 19:18 metadata
root@sega:/home/ilj % lsh /home/ilj/.local/share/Trash/files/
total 8.0K
drwx------ 2 ilj ilj 4.0K May 11 19:18 .
drwx------ 4 ilj ilj 4.0K May 11 19:18 ..
root@sega:/home/ilj % lsh /home/ilj/.local/share/Trash/info/
total 8.0K
drwx------ 2 ilj ilj 4.0K Jun 10 14:35 .
drwx------ 4 ilj ilj 4.0K May 11 19:18 ..

and there was a one string entry only in the metadata file. Moving Trash folder allowed me to start using it as expected instantly.

You propelled me to the right direction. Thanks!

The solution by ilj didn't work for me.

However, the metadata file (in ~/.local/share/Trash) had an inconsistent information. It's content was:

[Cached]
Size=18446744073517368387

but the Trash was empty.

After deleting the file ~/.local/share/Trash/metadata, I've send a small file to the Trash and a new metadata has been created. Now everything seems to be working right and metadata's content seems to be correct:

[Cached]
Size=1423

Good luck.

Same thing happened to me (twice).

I just edited the metadata file to: Size=0

Hi. Can someone provide a detailed description of how to find and delete the metadata file? I can not find the file to delete.

Or explain how to change the cash size?

Thanks.

Try deleting the entire ~/.local/share/Trash/ directory to ensure all metadata, etc sync issues are corrected.

This is still occurring in KDE 4.11.2 for some reason.
Killing Metadata file fixes it. No need to actually delete the entire folder.
But I'd like to know how it got such a huge number in there.

Hmm... This seems to happen whenever you delete a file as root, even if you skip the Trash by using
Code: Select all
sudo rm [flags] <file>
I had to do this because a file in my Home was owned by root and I could move it, but not delete it so it was causing errors whenever I emptied trash, I fixed it by restoring the item to it's original location, browsing to the directory, and running
Code: Select all
sudo rm <file>
After that, I could no longer use Trash. This has happened to me once before, but i just fixed it and thought nothing of it. Now that it has happened again and I seem to have figured out what is causing it, I figured that I should post here to tell people who stumble upon this thread.

It is easily fixable by opening a terminal emulator and entering
Code: Select all
rm ~/.local/share/Trash/metadata
.
