Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I'm not familiar with setting up peripherals from the command-line (as I prefer using KDE
![]() I messed up my display configuration using KDE 3.5 Control Center on Debian lenny as I was trying to connect a second monitor to my laptop. Currently I only get a command line and no GUI at startup. kdm display manager is said to be started but apparently doesn't work. Which configuration file should I edit to have a GUI at least on my standard built-in LCD? Thanks! Hecate |

Thanks. I don't think changing specific user files could fix it, as I get no GUI whatever, for any user. When system startup is over, the last line is Starting K display manager: kdm thereafter I get a command line login prompt, no GUI ever shows up. Any user that logs in to the command prompt stays with a command prompt interface. I now managed to fix it by copying back into xorg.conf a xorg.conf.1 that was in the same directory. Is there a safe way I can experiment with an external LCD screen setup? Currently it will show only random colored squares, so I have enabled in BIOS both the external and the laptop built-in screen. I'd rather not mess up again. Thanks! Hecate |

So have you actually tried it?
Whatever, check your Xorg.0.log for error messages. Also, if you're on Lenny you are bound to have an xorg.conf, correct? Check when the last changes were made and perhaps try a backup version.

Yes, after renaming to xorg.conf the backup xorg.conf.1 everything works fine. I'm so grateful to whoever programmed KControl to save the previous version of xorg.conf! Hecate |
