Good morning,
So I've been doing some reading, and searching. Mostly through threads like: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1452935 (which has several links to main KDE pages) And I still can't get my head around what a "Desktop Activity" is supposed to do that a Virtual Desktop can't or shouldn't be able to do. They both seem like they're attempting to do the same thing, but are fighting to do it. So here are my questions: 1. Does KDE assume all DA's are at the same screen resolution? In my dual monitor display I have one monitor at 1680x1050 and 1920x1080 running as a single x-session of 3600x1080. But if it assumes DA's are all the same size then would that explain why I get screens like this?: http://img268.imageshack.us/i/splitwtf.jpg/ Which actually shows THREE activity "Screens" all at once. Left screen is blank except for a bar, while the right screen has two activity desktops (both of which have the top third cut off) with a third DA peeking up from the bottom. Is there a term used to describe this behavior, so that I can read up on it? 2. What is the intended use of mouse scroll in DA's? It seems like sometimes I scroll wheel and I switch desktops, and other times it actually scrolls the current VD up or down into blank space, sort of like scrolling around zoomed out.. All I'm trying to do is to configure three VD's such that I have different tools/backgrounds/widgets on each. Are there any resources to help explain the differences between DA's and VD's and how to actually USE this feature? I've found several sites giving a high-level view of it such as http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma#Activiti ... l_Desktops . What are some good key-noun search-terms to use? |

As I look at it currently (and this is intended to change in future versions of KDE), desktop activities are basically like virtual desktops for plasma - enabling you to put different plasmoids on separate activities which you can switch between as you need to. Later on, there are intentions (and projects?) to make Activities more all-encompassing than that, in particular they will be moving session management to activities so that different activities will have different sets of (initial) applications. I think that there are also musings to move virtual desktops under activities, so that each activity will have its own set of virtual desktops.
2. In KDE4.4, you can configure the scroll wheel (and other mouse buttons) on a per-Activity basis (right-click on the background of the activity you want to configure -> Desktop Activity Settings -> Mouse Actions). It seems like you have some activities set to switch desktop and others to switch activity.

This does not work for the folderview activity! I can switch desktops via mouse wheel scrolling until I reach a folderview activity/desktop. The I have to go on by clicking the pager to go to the next desktop. The folderview mode ignores the actions assigned to the wheel. |

Scrolling on a Folderview Activity works here (Plasma Desktop 4.5.1), and other mouse actions as well.

Then I'll patiently wait until I can get my hands on 4.5.1... |
