hej,
i switched back from osx to kde, but when i have often many freezes. the strange thing is, that i can move the mousse, but i can't click something. the keybord also don't work. so i must switch to an virtual console and reboot the notebook. example when i have problems: i change the border-size in "window-decorations", and than all freezes. how can i find out what the problem is? i can't find any errors in the logs. greats and sorry for my bad english. papierbox edit: i hope this is the right board edit2: kde 4.5, ubuntu, thinkpad x61 with intel "gpu" edit3: alt + shift +F12 helps, than i must activate the effects again. it looks a litte bit like the problem in viewtopic.php?f=15&t=89674 |

The correct logs to check in this case are ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log
The fact that pressing Alt + Shift + F12 causes this problem to go away definitely indicates that this is caused by Desktop Effects. Which Effects do you have enabled in System Settings > Desktop Effects?

hej,
thanks for your reply. yes, it looks that i have some problems with the desktop effects. when i activate them i must always do it two times, becouse the first they crash. i only use: shadow (becouse i deactivate all borders of the windows), desktop grid and present windows. i would like to try more, but these are my 3 "must-have" effects. and i would be happy if my desktop is stable with these 3 effects. in Xorg.0.log nothing happen, only this:
in xsession-errors:
perhaps this helps a litte bit. i can't see anything "unnormal" there ![]() PS: with i think it was 4.2 all was fine... |

When frozen, try switching to a virtual terminal, and running "top". Is any process using large amounts of CPU?

Unfortunately I cannot reproduce. This is likely an interaction between your particular Intel driver, hardware and KWin unfortunately.

i think so too. but my problem is why get i no "error". how can i help the kde team to solve the problem. perhaps it is only an ubuntu problem. i am not sure. isn't there an option to activate an an debug-modus or something like that?

You can run "kdebugdialog" and enable all areas to collect more debug output from KDE itself. However, if the fault is caused by the graphics driver, then it will likely not be shown in the KDE debug logs. I believe there are instructions on Intel's website on how to help debug their drivers.

ok, thanks. in which file will write kde the debugging informations?

They will output to ~/.xsession-errors if not started in a terminal. If started in a terminal, they will output into the terminal instead.

I get a very similar problem, kde user interface freezes sometimes when I click on a different window to choose a different process. The mouse continues to operate normally.
The effect stops all input - no konsole windows accept key strokes, I cannot change window focus, and the system tray stops updating. I can't ALT-TAB to change tasks either. After a while, typically 10 to 15 seconds at most, it unfreezes and a number of mouse or keyboard actions which were done during the freeze are then "replayed" at high speed. I am running kde 4.5.95 on suse 11.4 milestone 6, on Dell E4200 with Intel core2Duo U9600 (1.60GHz) and Intel GM45 graphics; there's plenty of memory and swap is completely unused. It doesn't appear to be a system load issue. I am running dual screen though. As for KDe desktop effects, I have only a few enabled: snap helper, dashboard, taskbar thumbnails, window geometry, startup feedback, dialogue parent, dim for administrator mode, cover switch. I will try disabling a bunch of these to see if it improves things. |

I happened to boot my laptop in single-screen mode, i.e. 1200x800, and I find that the system freezes for 20 seconds *every*time* I use alt-tab to task switch. If I click on the task in the task bar then there is no problem. I turned off all task switching effects except box switch and it still happened, so I will investigate further.
I also get weird problems with the regular kde panel not appearing at all when booting single screen, but that's another issue ![]() |

That freeze is due to a bug in the Intel Xorg driver, which reports certain features to be present, when they aren't.
This thread provides a workaround.

OK, I had a tail -f running on .xsession-errors, and was sure to insert blank lines whenever something non-freezing was logged (that file is full of errors. do KDE programmers actually fix their bugs???)
and when my desktop froze, I saw a huge splurge of errors
