I'll probably completely re-install PCLOS at that time, then set things up like I have them now and see if the problem is still there. But I'm posting this "follow-up" here and bumping this thread in case anyone knows anything that might solve this problem.

That's only really necessary if you haven't kept your system up-to-date (and even then, chances are pretty good that you can just grab the latest updates and be fine). PCLinuxOS is a rolling-release distro, meaning that they regularly release new software to the repositories (usually within a few days of the upstream release), So an up-to-date system will be the same as a newly installed system using the latest snapshot (excepting software installed from the repositories in the interim).

BTW, they made a major change to how the activities work in 4.6 (big enough that the PCLOS developers opted to reset your desktop settings as part of the upgrade rather than figure out a proper upgrade path). I'm not sure if this bug was fixed in that release, but you might try upgrading and see.

Yes, I'm aware that PCLOS is a rolling-release distro. I understand that the latest snapshot should be no different than what I have after pulling in the latest updates (except for add'l apps I've installed).

The very first thing I do whenever I log in is go to Synaptic and apply any available updates. All along, I've kept my system completely up-to-date. I'm using the latest KDE version (4.6.4) that's available from the PCLOS repos.

Still, after each batch of upgrades, when I log in I'm immediately taken to Desktop #4, no matter which desktop I was using when I logged out. At this point, after all these months of hoping that the latest upgrades would fix the issue, and not being able to find out what is controlling this behavior, reinstalling using the latest snapshot seems like the only thing left to try.

This is solved. Rename or delete the file ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc.

A "thank you" to JoeSomebody at the PCLOS forums, who credited icewind on freenode's #kde.

Sorry to dig up an old one...

But I've tried renaming kwinrc. It wipes out all of my settings, animations, and desktops 2-4.

The only way for me to get all of my customizations back is to replace the original file and restart... But then it boots back up to Desktop 3 >:(

Does anyone have more information about this procedure?

I'd suggest opening a new topic in the KWin forum about that - it might be possible to rectify the issue in your current kwinrc.
