Icons rearrange to left side

Thu Sep 02, 2010 6:29 pm
I put my icons in specific places on the desktop in folder view. It seems KDE 4.5 is doing the same thing as it was 2 releases ago. A couple releases ago if you created any object or renamed a file or moved a file to a folder or folder to folder the icons would arrange down the left hand side. KDE 4.5 is doing the same thing. This is spectacularly annoying to me.

Would it be possible to have you folks at KDE get this worked out once and for all, finally,to put it to rest forever? Maybe you don't use folder view (which I consider to be the only functional view -- my personal opinion) and that's why you never see it. Your icons are locked into place in desktop view.

I was hoping for a quick fix and I have held off upgrading 5 other Linux boxes because of this bug. This is disappointing as this release has some nice features.

There are a couple other problems too. If you put a CD in the drive the device notifier icon represents the USB port. If you put a USB flash card in the icon represents the USB port (which is fine). This means you use the same icon for all devices. But that icon is not appropriate for all devices.

When you are moving or copying files and the notifier window pops up and you state you want to see more detail the notifier window resizes a "portion" of itself (the portion showing the "more" or details) below the panel at the bottom of the screen. We can't resize or move it.

You are missing many weather icons.

I still can't change the date format in the digital clock located in the panel at the bottom of the screen. No matter what I change the settings to in the data/time settings it always displays the date format incorrectly in the object in the panel.

Someone has changed the way several features of the desktop work when it comes to displaying things like the K start menu. The way it is done is very unpolished. It works. I was hoping you guys would fix this but you have been making it so that other pop ups do it in the same manner. That's making your work look unpolished and immature (at least in my eyes). When you pop up the K menu it seems to take a snapshot of either the desktop or the area around the K menu. Then there's a delay/flash and then the menu pops up. Immediate subsequent attempts do not visually demonstrate this behavior. If you wait a while it will happen again. As I said other pop ups are doing it in this same manner and I thought I'd add my voice to what may be considered a gimmick approach to solving a problem. I would hope for a more polished approach.

First, it's better if you start one thread per problem.

That being said, I remember folderview-as-a-desktop behaved like that before. I haven't tried in 4.4 or later though, but I'll see if I can replicate the problem.

Regarding your second problem (icons for devices) it shouldn't behave like that. There are several icons available, or should be. At this moment I have three in a Shelf widget: usb-stick, mp3-player (how it's determined it's actually a mp3-player rather than a generic usb-stick I have no idea), and CD. All look different, and I've also earlier seen VideoDVDs and AudioCDs with their own distinctive icons.

The other problems I haven't encountered (or noticed in the case of the last problem) so can't say anything about them.

Okay, quoting myself...I've now tried using 4.5.0 and 4.5.1 in the recently released beta of Kubuntu 10.10 as well as in 4.5.1 on openSUSE 11.3.

And so far I haven't been able to trigger the "icons rearrange down the left hand side in a folderview desktop" bug. No matter what I do, the icons stay where I put them.

@jimbo99
- if you create/use a clean user do these issues persist?
- what distro and version are you using?
- you should post 1 issue per post unless there's a definite relationship

I am also having very real issues with the desktop icons moving every time something is done.
These are just some of the issues that cause this action:

rename an icon, copy/link an icon to the desktop, change fonts, moving something to the desktop.

It is extremely annoying as I love using this desktop.

Is there any kind of fix?

I removed the .kde and .kde 4 folders and when I load KDE 4.5 I am presented with a brand new destkop (desktop view, etc). When I switch to folder view and close down the plasma widget for desktop view, then put icons on the desktop in specific places, and then move a file/folder into my home folder by dragging and dropping then everything aligns to the left side.

This issue extremely annoys me as well. I think it is not getting enough attention from the developers, as is a huge inconvenience for many ordinary users.
There is a bug report for this though: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=248869

They issued a recent update but it doesn't resolve the issue. Why would they make a fix to KDE and then not fix such an annoying issue. This doesn't make working with this product any fun. This issue needs a higher priority. And, it needs to be fixed once and for all.

THIS ISSUE IS NOT NEW. IT EXISTED A COUPLE RELEASES AGO. Then it was fixed and is now back. I think a bit better regression testing is in order here.

I just started having this icon problem also. I am Running OpenSuse 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 "release 3". No KDE version seems to be safe from this problem based on different posts I have read.

I just applied some available updates on my openSuse 11.3 - KDE 4.5.3, turned off
my laptop to go for some shopping. Restarted it, and again I ran into the icons
being rearranged to the left. >:(

This is really very annoying, having to unlock the icon positions, drag them back
into the place where I want them to be.
A problem existing for quite some time now.
It happens with almost all KDE updates and with these updates some of the user
settings are getting lost, probably being overwritten.

I rather see such an annoying problem solved, than getting some new features which
mainly improve the cosmetic looks.
Hope it gets solved soon.

Best regards,

Ellio
