I am new to KDE environment. I have no clue what to do.
When I want to open RTM, Gmail or Youtube. KDE open cache files under /var/tmp/kdecache-user. So, I cannot use ALT-F2 or gnome-do to open a webpage. Could anyone help me? Thank you. I made a screen cast in Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2W2Eu754ys |

Do you see the same behavior with a new user account?

Can you please check System Settings -> (Workspace Appearance and Behavior) -> Default Applications -> Web Browser and tell us your settings there?
By the way, it's much appreciated that you take your time to post a video of the problem.

It doesn't happen in a new user. After a few tests, I found it was because I setup default browser to Iron. With Konqueror, there was no problem. I guess that Iron doesn't work well with KDE. Do you have any idea what to question for this issue? And Where? Thank you for quick reply. |

This is because KDE does not know what protocols your browser, Iron, supports. As such, it downloads the file for Iron, and instructs Iron to open that local file.
Have you added Iron to the menu / is it in the menu? If it isn't, please add it first. Using the Menu Editor, check to see what the command to launch Iron is. It needs to contain at least "%u" or "%U" for it to be opened correctly.

Thank you for your reply. I am sorry I didn't get what you mean by "tell us your setting there?". There are two radio button for Web Browser. They are "In an application based on the contents of the URL" and "In the following browser". So, I set it to be Iron from the list when I choose the second radio button. Is this what you wanted me to do? Thank you. |

Thank you for your help. I didn't not added Iron to the menu. I believe that it was added automatically when I installed Iron. To recheck it, I tried to find Menu Editor, I could not find one in System Setting. I put "iron %U" as you suggested under System Setting > Workspace Appearance and Behavior > Default Application > Web Browser > in the following browser. I thought this was for choosing browser. I guess it is a just command line. Anyway, you helped me a lot. It works finally. But it opens two same tabs every time. I am happy to make it work. Hopefully, I could solve this problem too. Thank you for your helps. |

If you simply enter a command in Default Applications, then the %u is not needed ( or shouldn't be, it is enough for Opera ). If you create an entry in the Menu system ( using kmenuedit ) then you need the %u / %U however.

Basically I was suspecting the same thing as bcooksley, but since he is much more knowledgeable in this area I'll let him take command here. (And yes, that's exactly what I wanted to know.)

After I upgrade to KDE 4.5.2. "iron %u" or "iron %U" doesn't work. It open local cache file as it was. I guess KDE is very customizable and very hard to make it work right. Thank you.

Have you added a menu item for Iron?

When I installed Iron, Iron was added automatically in menu. The command in the menu item didn't not have %U switch. So I edit it to "iron %u". ALT+F2 and gnome-do works as I expected. But Docky opens cache file. Thank you.

This is likely a flaw with Docky, given it works with KRunner and Gnome Do itself.
