How to disable KDE trash can?

Sun Oct 24, 2010 10:25 pm
I am using KDE 4.5.2. I do not want keep deleted file. KDE seems to move files to trash can when I remove them. I do not want it. I want KDE to remove them instead of moving to trash can. What do I need to do? Thank you.

In the dolphin-settings, select General and Context menu. Check the "Show delete command" and hit ok. From now on, you will get an additional entry (delete)in the pop-up menu you get when you right click on a file or directory. This entry will bypass the trashcan.

Another option (also in Dolphin, trash "tab") is to set the "Limit to maximum size" to a really low value (it doesn't seem to support setting it to 0 %, 0.001 % is possible) and the "When limit reached" to "Delete oldest files from trash" (or biggest for that matter, as long as it's not just "Warn me"). The second option will use the trash but it will be filled up pretty quickly and emptied automatically when full (on my system, with a home-dir of almost a terrabyte I can get a trashcan size as small as around 9 meg).

If you go to dolphin's shortcut settings you should also be able to change the shortcut for "Delete" to "del". That should warn you that it conflicts with other shortcuts, so click "Reassign". That should make the "Delete" keyboard button delete items instead of moving them to the trash can.

Thank you for all your helps. Those helps actually helped me a lot. But I guess I better to leave a note for newbies like me and confirming my understanding.

KDE offers two functions at same time. I can delete files completely or move them to trash can. In XP and Gnome, I believe only one function is available at a given configuration. Depending on the configuration, deleted files are either moved to trash can or removed permanently for a partition.(Please, correct me if my understanding is wrong)

In KDE, I have two commands which are "Delete" and "Move to trash can". In Dolphin, keyboard shortcut for Delete command is SHIFT + DEL key. And DEL key is for "Move to trash can". I prefer using DEL key for permanent deletion since this make more sense to me because I have not used trash can much both in XP or Gnome. I simply switched the shortcuts in Dolphin. This helped me.

Thank you.

PS> For Kryten2X4B's second solution, I couldn't understand KDE system deeply enough. I left it for some time later. But you helped me. Thank you.

If I remember correctly, you have the same shortcuts in Windows (Delete to move to trash, Shift + Delete to delete).

If you're satisfied with the solution, please click on Image under the post with the answer to mark as solved. :)

I think your summary above my previous post is a good answer. This topic isn't long so people can always read the previous posts you refer to if they want.
