How do I get kde3 back?

Fri Oct 24, 2008 12:43 pm
Cross posting from opensuse forum.
opensuse 11 x86_64
ATI Radeon 3650, driver radeonhd

While trying to get my Hauppauge hvr-1300 to work I tried xawtv. My screen went blank, and my monitor posted a "No video" message, so the signal was lost at the card.
I killed the x server and logged back in: blank screen, "No Video" message.
This happens whenever I log in using kde3, with any user. I created a new user and got the same results on logging in. kde4 and gnome work.
Since the happens with every user it must be something in the universal kde3 setup. (I deleted all the user's .kde files as I was trouble shooting. No help.)
Is there a universal kde3 config file I can delete or modify to correct this?
Where do I go from here?

Could you please post the link to the openSuSE forum posting? If you managed to solve the issue there, then could you please add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the thread subject? Thanks in advance.

I got my kde3 back by changing the display manager to kdm4, but that was not really satisfactory. It was an accidental hack. Any further information you could provide would be appreciated, although I'm a little reluctant to change too much, since the system works as it is, and if I hose anything, my wife will be screaming for me to put Windows on the machine.;-)

Thanks in advance for any input.

Sounds like the KDE 3 KDM Configuration file was corrupted or damaged. If you were to try anything, you could reinstall the KDE 3 KDM package which should provide a fresh version of the file

however, given the KDE 4 KDM works fine I would recommend not doing anything. ( if it ain't broke, don't fix it )
