Hi all:
I've searched around for an answer to this, but couldn't find one. I just installed a fresh copy of KDE 4.5.4, and so far, things seem to be fine. Except for the fact that the KMenu has no menu items whatsoever under either the Favorites or Applications section. If I switch the menu to a classic style, all that shows is Favorites, Run Command and Leave. I am starting KDE from an entirely fresh profile, and before logging in, I ran 'rm -fr ~/.kde*' to make sure things were as fresh as possible. So I'm clueless as to the problem here. For what it's worth, this is on Gentoo and I installed the kdebase-meta package, which typically includes the whole kit and kaboodle. Thanks for any help! Edit: I ended up just recreating my entire user account, and that fixed it. Apparently there are files outside of .kde4 that can affect the installation. I didn't realize that. |

Correct, files in /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/, /tmp/kde-$USER and /tmp/ksocket-$USER are used by KDE.
Problems such as this one are usually fixed by running "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental".

Hi bcooksley:
Thanks for the response ![]() To be honest, I don't think those file locations were the problem. I've been a long-time KDE user, but decided to evaluate other desktop environments for a couple of months, and during that time, KDE wasn't installed on the machine at all. So it seems unlikely that files inside of the temp folders could have caused this, unless they really do last there for months. Also, I fixed this by purging my entire user directory, which is none of those locations you mentioned. So I'm still led to believe that there are other file locations inside of ~/ aside from .kde* that can affect the install. |

Ah, it could have been a *.menu or *.desktop file under ~/.local or ~/.config which caused this too.
