Hello. Had this problem and thought that I should pass it on and maybe help someone.

I am running an updated Debian stable with ATI on the mobo. When I clicked on SystemSettings then Desktop as user (and root), the crash window popped up. The crash did not generate enough info for a bug report and my web searches showed no other solved problems.

I believed that I had a corrupted file somewhere.

From the crash report, I got:

Application: System Settings (systemsettings), signal: Segmentation fault
[KCrash Handler]
#6 0xb198329c in XF86DRIQueryExtension () from /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
#7 0x0000000f in ?? ()

Running from konsole I got:

???@??? ~ $ systemsettings
[after clicking on the Desktop icon]
???@??? ~ $ Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString)
KCrash: Application 'systemsettings' crashing...
sock_file=/home/???/.kde/socket-???/kdeinit4

I searched for XF86DRIQueryExtension and libGL.so and found that they were associated to fglrx.

Some of my debugging that did not work included purging systemsettings and reinstalling and reinstalling the KDE base apps. What did work was purging fglrx and about 5 or 6 associated packages. The crash did not occur. I reinstalled fglrx and the crash happened again. Something in the systemsettings does not like fglrx.

Bottom line: Crash not solved but corrected.

This machine is identical to two others and neither has a problem with fglrx. Very strange. Using System Settings, Version 1.0 and KDE 4.4.5. This is not current for most users but it is current for me.

Hope this helps someone.
