I have been trying to use openSUSE 11.3 with kde 4.4.4 on an old Dell server following an upgrade from openSUSE 11.2 which has kde 4.3.5. I have been very frustrated by the absence of any means, that I can find, to change the screen resolution which is reported as about 800 x 600. I say "about" because the resolution is slightly better than this but the system reports that there is insufficient memory for higher resolutions.
The machine has an integrated graphics controller: "A VGA-compatible video subsystem with an ATI 3D RAGE PRO SVGA video controller. This video subsystem contains 2 MB of SGRAM video memory (nonupgradeable)." When running openSUSE 11.2 with kde 4.3.5 I was able to configure the graphics to 1024 x 768 with 16 bit colour and all was well. This display resolution is what I needed for my purposes and I do not need better colour. Clearly the integrated graphics card was and is capable of giving me what I require. There is advice elsewhere in this forum which states that the new kde detects the system capabilities and adjusts accordingly. Well not to my satisfaction. In other systems it has usually been possible to trade off colour bits with screen resolution and my graphics controller can give me what I want but I haven't a clue how to get it using kde 4.4.4. In consequence I have reverted to openSUSE 11.2 until hopefully somebody here can advise me how to change to 16 bit colour with 1024 x 768 screen resolution in kde 4.4.4. Please could somebody help on this? Budgie2 |

The resolution and colours available are the responsibility of the X server. You may need to install an appropriate ATi driver from the repositories to be able to use your card effectively. More documentation will likely be available from openSUSE on how to do this.

Noted and thanks. I had been under the impression it was a change in kde that was responsible. Will revert to openSUSE forum.
