Hi all,
I have updated to KDE 4.6 (rls 381) from one of the OpenSUSE's repository. Since that update I have big problems with very slow response of the whole KDE environment and all KDE apps. More particularly, when I click on any icon and lunch an application, the response is about 2 minutes. When I start an KDE app. (e.g. Dolphin) the response in the app. (displaying dialogs, etc.) is also slow. However, when I start Firefox or VLC (i.e non-KDE apps), these work fine. I have also tried to log in as root, and KDE under the root account works fine, without any delays. So, the problem must be somewhere in my profile. Does anybody have any tips how to solve the problem? Thanks, fli. |

I'd start by disabling all kwin effects in systemsettings (or removing the kwinrc file ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc)
if you run ksysguard do you see any abnormally high cpu utilization? |

Also, please check the memory utilisation of your system using System Monitor (ksysguard)

Yesterday, I deleted the whole ~/.kde4 without any changes after reboot. I have disabled all desktop effects and, also, all desktop widgets are turned off. The system monitor does not show anything abnormal, i.e. there are 3 or 4 apps. using 1-2pct of CPU, sometimes plasma-desktop uses 11pct for a second. I did not check the memory utilisation, I will do so tonight. And, I plan to kill the process from 'ps -U' one by one to determine which slows down the system. |

Just as a warning, kded4 if you use NetworkManager is needed for the operation of network connectivity. ksmserver4 is a process critical to the operation of a KDE 4 session, it will immediately exit if killed. klauncher4 is also critical to the execution of KDE applications and networking.
The usual suspect to check in the event of slowness is Nepomuk indexing (not Nepomuk itself, simply the Strigi indexer).

Nepomuk is off, Strigi is off in KDE Setting. Utilization of memory is OK (I have over 2GB free in both, RAM and swap) All akonadi and nepomuk related processes are killed ... and the problem is still here ![]() |

how well do apps launch if you launch them in konsole? krunner?
can you run iotop to see is there is excessive disk i/o (it runs in konsole from the command line) have you tried logging in as a new user other than root? I know deleting ~/.kde4 should be the same but .... if you rename ~/.config and ~/.kde4 and restart kde is it better? what themes and decorations are you using? what graphics card and driver? quick recap: - logging in as root is fine - only kde apps are affected - no excessive cpu showing - kwin effects disabled - ram plentiful - Nepomuk is off, Strigi off - ~/.kde4 was deleted |

Re-summary:
- logging in as root is fine - logging in as a new user is also fine (even with the copy of ~/.kde4 and ~/.config into the home directory of the new user) - starting of all apps is affected - running only of kde apps are affected. Running means displaying of menus or dialogs, or when the window of the application must be "redraw". For example, 'mc' in konsole works fine. - no excessive cpu showing - kwin effects disabled - ram plentiful - Nepomuk is off, Strigi off - ~/.kde4 ~/.config and was deleted (more particularly, renamed) - the problem is with the basic opensuse theme (but root is using the same theme without any problem) - graphic card driver: radeon/swrast Two remarks: 1) I cannot find the command "iotop" ![]() 2) I have noticed that when I do an action (e.g. open a menu) for the first time, it takes about 2minutes. However, when I open the same menu after a while again, it appears immediately. So, the actions are somehow buffered. Probably, the problem is related to something that draws the windows. |

iotop is in the openSuse oss repository and in the upgrade one see http://packages.opensuse-community.org/ ... enSUSE_113
so if you change the theme everything is ok? run "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" it rebuilds the system configuration cache, maybe yours is corrupt |

Please check the permissions of /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER and optionally remove it (outside KDE)

Hi all,
good news (at least for me ![]() or this: solved the problem - I am not sure if kbuildsycoca4 or deleting cash requires reboot. I made both and reboot and everything is OK now. Thanks a lot folks! |

I tried "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" as well as removing the cache while outside of KDE (runlevel 3) on openSUSE 11.3, KDE 4.6.0.
I still notice the same slow startup behaviour for Dolphin and file dialogues. There is a 3-5 second delay before Dolphin is ready after launching it. Reverting to KDE 4.5.5 brings back the quick loading times. (On KDE 4.5.5., Dolphin opens up almost instantly.) I tried the ideas in tihs thread, but I still experience slower loading times. I don't use any of the search or indexing services either. This is a 32bit machine.

flan_suse - did you try creating and logging in as a new user?
you should create a new thread (as this one has been marked resolved) and note this thread (with a link) and what actions you'd already attempted and if this delay only affects kde apps or all apps ps I deleted your duplicate post |
