cannot mount CDs or DVDs

Wed Feb 16, 2011 9:02 pm
Hallo I have a problem mounting a CD or a DVD in openSuSE 11.3 and KDE 4.4.4
I have been reading forum for a while, but I cannot figure out how to solve it, the only thing I know is a bug in KDE (or maybe not)

So this is the fact:
Yesterday I could mount (automatically mount) video DVDs and music CDs without problems and play it with VLC or other but I could not mount data CDs. To solve the problem I decided to install xine and lame library (as suggested from some posts). Now I cannot mount DVD and CD at all!.
I have tried almost everything I read in posts with no success:
Here is the result of some command that could clarify (to you hopefully) my problem:
Code: Select all
$ ls /dev -l | grep cd
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root       root           3 2011-02-15 21:44 cdrom -> sr0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root       root           3 2011-02-15 21:44 cdrw -> sr0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root       root           3 2011-02-15 21:44 scd0 -> sr0
crw-rw----  1 root       cdrom    21,   0 2011-02-15 18:42 sg0
brw-rw----+ 1 root       cdrom    11,   0 2011-02-15 21:44 sr0

Code: Select all
dmesg | grep sr0
[11278.007982] sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[11278.007984] sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[11278.007988] sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Logical block address out of range
[11278.007990] sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00
[11278.007994] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
[11278.007996] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0

Code: Select all
omegatre:/home/franco # cat /dev/scd0
cat: /dev/scd0: No medium found

I added a line in fstab but no success:
Code: Select all
/dev/sr0     /media/cdrom auto        noauto,rw,users    0 0

I edited the .fdi file in such a way:
Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<deviceinfo version="0.2">
  <device>
    <match key="info.udi" string="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVDRAM_GSA_4082B">
      <merge key="storage.media_check_enabled"
type="bool">true</merge>
    </match>
  </device>
</deviceinfo>

Code: Select all
omegatre:/home/franco # solid-hardware query 'IS OpticalDisc'
omegatre:/home/franco #

Hope this will give you an idea..

Franco

This looks like a problem with your CD/DVD reader (i.e. hardware), at least from what the kernel log tells me.

I will try to install Ubuntu on the disk and see if the CD/DVD driver is working. Do you mean I need to buy a new driver?

That's a distinct possibility. It could also mean that the laser lens is dirty and needs just some cleaning, though.
