Hi there,
I installed the alpha version of 11.04 to make use of the usb 3.0 port in my laptop. Works fine ... but I have a problem with the display ... it is dimmed almost instantly. When i press the buttons to change the settings, i get a short bright flash ... but then, back to less than 50% or so. Checked the power settings, disabled all "dimming" doesnt help. any idea? (no, its not the hardware, when running 10.10 i dont have any problems) |

This could possibly be a bug in X, resetting the brightness to what it previously was. If you use the Battery applet to adjust your brightness, does it still flicker?

bcooksley: what do you mean with 'battery applet'?
If you are refering to the 'power save settings' ... that is exactly where I changed the brigthness levels for dimming ... i even disabled dimming for all power save levels ... no effect at all. |

In the system tray you should see battery icon, indicating your current level of battery power. If you press this, a dialog will slide up, allowing you to change brightness among other things.

Found it ... but doesnt really help. The bootup and login screen are shown with full brightness ... but while KDE is starting brightness is dramatically reduced. I pulled the slider of the battery applet to max ... but brightness didnt improve much - still much darker than it should be. Doesnt matter if laptop is on battery, power plug or even in the docking station. |

Are you using 4.6.0? IIRC there is a bug that got fixed and should be in for 4.6.1.

As I said in my first posting - I am using kubuntu 11.04 alpha 2. I dont know which version of KDE that is. I can say that I am runing with the 4.6 backport on 10.10 for normal work ... and no such problem on that platform. |

I think it is likely an xorg/driver issue in Natty - it is still under development, after all
natty is using fresh versions of the kernel, xorg and drivers, newer than what is in maverick. Often there are new updates several times in one day. I had a similar problem where my screen brightness would always fall back to a lower level after a reboot. But in my case the issue went away after a recent update shortly after I discovered the problem. I suggest you file a bug on it in Launchpad if this continues to happen for you.

I installed natty kubuntu alpha 3 yesterday and gave it a fast try:
like before, the display brightness is reduced during the KDE splash ... but the keyboard controls work fine; and the battery applet also allows to bring brightness to 100%. So I regard this as resolved. |

The reduction of brightness at the KDE startup splash is likely the application of KDE Power Management profiles, which can be customised in System Settings > Power Management.
