He there,
saw this occasionally before; but today it hit me at least two or three times: i have the lock/leave widget in my panel; pressing lock ... locks fine; but when I press "leave" - nothing happens. When I use the "K" launcher and switch to the leave page ... again; neither "restart" or "shutdown" have any effect. Only way to shutdown ... I open a console and do a "sudo halt" or reboot ... any idea? (running kubuntu 10.10 with the 4.6 backports ppa enabled) EDIT: i realized I updated the nvidia drivers this morning; could this have any such effect? |

I had exactly the same after one update on Fedora 14. The next update cured it, so maybe you have to just grab the next update as soon as you can.

What kind of upgrade? nvidia? Or KDE? (as there was a KDE update yesterday on the backports ppa; assuming 4.6.0 to 4.6.1) |

This can be caused by a number of conditions. An unresponsive application will cause it, as will a failure by Plasma to communicate with the session manager.
The session manager runs as "ksmserver" in your process list. If you encounter this again, close as many apps as you can to avoid data loss, then kill the session manager. You will be immediately logged out.

Thank you; you are answering the question I was going to ask next. So there is no way to restart the session manager (like one can "replace" kwin)? Although I am wondering: as I am really looking for shutdown; are there any major differences (or risks) between a) killing ksmserver ... and trigger shutdown from the login panel afterwards b) doing a "sudo halt" / reboot from a konsole window I would assume that both ways might come at some risk of loosing data; or are there important differences that would make "a)" the better workaround? |

You should only kill ksmserver if shutdown from the panel fails. As soon as you kill ksmserver, your session will end, and you will be logged out and returned to the login screen.
Killing ksmserver is slightly nicer than doing a reboot from a Konsole window, as it allows X to go down more gracefully.

I cant say what exactly made the problem go away ... but it didnt bug me for weeks.
Today; I updated to 4.6.2 ... and here we go: again; "leave" wont work. Really really fascinating: when I change the screen resolution ... I was able to invoke shutdown. Well, not really successfully, as it hang at some point; and I had to switch to the console and do a sudo halt. btw: same hang when i did a killall kmserver + shutdown from panel afterwards. I do hope that this goes away after installing kubuntu 11.04 in a few weeks. config: I am running nvdia 270.29 on a Lenovo W510 ... |

Hej all,
after I upgraded my Kubuntu 10.10 to KDE 4.6.2. I have a similar issue: When I click on the shutdown button, my system actually do not a shutdown, but shows me a login on console. Perhaps this is related? |

I think so. By now (not that I changed anything) the shutdown icon seems to work, but hangs afterwards at the console. When I press the power button of my laptop, shutdown continues ... at least two out of three times. Very very annoying. Quality this is not. Is that a new sport within KDE that even a new minor release breaks something really basic? |

This is likely a regression in the code. Please file a bug on bugs.kde.org.

This pointpoint release is really annoying. The first bug I saw was just after restart: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=270327. (µblogging widget breaks plasma-shell)
PS: I just wrote a confirmation comment in the bug tracker for the shutdown bug. |

I've started to have this problem too. Looks like a bug has already been raised, and fixed (though for 4.6.3 - but you could apply a fix manually in the meanwhile if you want, I guess...) https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=270228 via http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.p ... =3116268.0 |

I had this problem too: after clicking shutdown, restart or logout there was no effect; switch user did work, though.
From what I've seen on the web, there can be different causes: - problems with the sounds backend (in which case reinstalling speex (?) solved the problem - google for details..), - corrupted logout sound (disabling the logout sound or all notification sounds should help here), - invalid shutdown command (the command should be: shutdown -h now, not: shutdown -p now), - or - as in my case - an application running in the background (?) that blocked the shutdown etc. In my case I had skype launched at logon (via system settings). Whenever I'd close or eventually when I removed it from the 'autostart', the shutdown, restart or logout window/popup would appear nicely. I hope sb finds this useful. |
