Any folder is empty, until I refresh it

This is happening on openSUSE 11.3, KDE 4.6.1, Dolphin 1.6.1. It only started after I updated to 4.6.1.

If I run Dolphin (File Manager) from the menu, like any other normal shortcut, I see a window with my home folder and all of its contents.

If I open a shortcut URL that points to a folder (e.g, /home/user/Pictures/), it will show me an empty folder that contains 0 items. In the bottom right I see a progress bar that never moves and it says "Loading folder..."

If I hit F5 or View > Refresh, it fixes this, and now I can see all of the contents inside of the folder.

Sometimes, rarely, it will display the contents of the folder, but there will also be a frozen progress bar in the bottom right.

This glitch never happens if I launch Dolphin as an application. It only occurs if I launch a URL shortcut to a folder.

This is happening on two different computers, one 32-bit, the other 64-bit, with or without compositing.

I just created a link to application with the command "Dolphin ~/MyTemp" and it worked fine when clicked

Is there anything special about the folder like is it huge, is it a link to an external or ntfs drive?

you can post the contents of the link for someone to have a look

this is what mine looks like
Code: Select all
Desktop Entry]
Comment[en_US]=
Comment=
Exec=dolphin ~/MyTemp
GenericName[en_US]=
GenericName=
Icon=exec
MimeType=
Name[en_US]=duh
Name=duh
Path=
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
TerminalOptions=
Type=Application
X-DBUS-ServiceName=
X-DBUS-StartupType=
X-KDE-SubstituteUID=false
X-KDE-Username=
X-SuSE-translate=true

Nope. Just a normal folder, with a few subdirectories, on an ext4 partition on the main drive.

Code: Select all
[Desktop Entry]
Exec=dolphin ~/MyTemp

...

In your above example, it executes Dolphin with an argument. With my case, it's just a URL link, like so:
Code: Select all
[Desktop Entry]
Icon=user-home
Type=Link
URL[$e]=file://$HOME/
X-SuSE-translate=true

This has been working fine with 4.4, 4.5, and even 4.6.0.

Can you try the above shortcut on your system?

I can confirm with your method Dolphin opens but no folders or files are shown until I hit reload

Is it safe for me to make a bug report based on this?

I couldn't reproduce this on KDE Trunk.

I can confirm this. I discovered it by using QuickAcces to open my ~/ folder, which is blank until i refresh. No other folder produces this one for me.

Kubuntu 11.04, KDE 4.6.1

I went ahead and filed a bug report. There might be an all-encompassing bug in Dolphin for KDE 4.6.1 that includes this glitch. There seem to be a number of bugs related to Dolphin surfacing recently on the 4.6.1 updates, as seen in this forum as well. I stumbled upon a couple of bug reports about Dolphin that seem to resemble this bug, but not absolutely.

Are the following related to the problem described in this thread?

An update. Looks like a bug was already filed, and this is fixed for 4.6.2!

Read this on the Arch forum:

Solution: Open Dolphin and click settings-configure dolphin. In the location box you will see file:///home/your username. Remove your username so it will read file:///home/ Then click apply and OK

Works for me :)

Works here too! Nice tip, and good find. I'll change it back to the default after the KDE 4.6.2 updates roll through. For the time being, I'll use the workaround you provided.

I think this update meant I had to revert back to ~:

[2011-03-27 18:16] upgraded kdelibs (4.6.1-2 -> 4.6.1-3)
