I am having MANY plasma crashes on kubuntu 10.10. I am trying to figure out exactly what is going wrong and where. The crashes are primarily from plasma-desktop and knotify4 but sometimes other things (like kmix) crash.
In most cases, the kde crash manager pops up and tells me I don't have enough information to submit a bug. Details show that it has received a segmentation violation. It offers to let me install debug symbols, but it really should not have because they are already installed:
I'm not sure how to debug this problem. To try a few things, I have manually started both plasma-desktop and kdenotify4 from the command line using --nofork --sync and I can see a few weird things, especially from knotify4, like this:
QSocketNotifier: Invalid socket 3 and type 'Read', disabling... knotify4: Fatal IO error: client killed KCrash: Application 'knotify4' crashing... KCrash: Attempting to start /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/drkonqi from kdeinit sock_file=/home/cepasp/.kde/socket-leavenworth78/kdeinit4__0 QSocketNotifier: Invalid socket 11 and type 'Read', disabling...
In this case, the KDE crash handler only said: Application: KNotify (knotify4), signal: Segmentation fault Does anybody have any idea how I can get some useful debugging information out of this, so that I can give the developers a useful bug report? --Chris |

suggestion one - update kde, 4.4.5 be old(ish), current is 4.6.1 (no idea what Maverick has available)
suggestion two - create a new user and see if the problems occur, if not there's a configuration corruption somewhere you can also use kdebugdialog, run it and enable the plasma apps (use the search bar) then check out ~/.xsession-errors for messages ps for code use [ ] not < >, just like you did for quote ![]() |
