Poor performance after ctrl+alt+f1

Wed Apr 06, 2011 3:04 pm
Hello there!

After switching to a virtual terminal and back again to plasma my performance is worse. After a while, speed comes back. Is anyone experimenting the same problem?

Which graphics card does your system have? (and which driver do you use with it?)
In addition, does disabling/enabling Desktop Effects make any difference, and how do you perceive the performance to have degraded?

My Nvidia graphics card is Geforce 210, and I am using version 256.53 of the propietary nVidia driver. However I disabled desktop effect to get better performance. (Later it turned out that the majority of the degradation is due to some amarok bug).

The performance is slow...the windows take a lot to change focus for example. And also I have the sensation that everything takes too much memory to run... I have a 2gb of RAM and its always near saturation. I will show you the output of ps and free: (atm the computer is not too slow, just slightly slow)

Most of your memory seems to be taken by Firefox and X. The usage of X is likely due to known leaks in the NVidia driver, not much you can do other than logout every few days to cause X to be relaunched unfortunately....

Thank you very much. Yeah, that solves the problem. I think I will make some noise in the nVidia forums and hope that the next version of the drivers is better :/

Thank you !
