KDE hangs on display mode change

Wed May 04, 2011 10:12 am
Hi everybody!

I couldn't find the same problem as mine in Google, so I decided to post it here:

I'm using Mandriva 2010.2 with KDE 4.4.5 installed on HP 6530b laptop. The problem is that when I change display settings with xrandr, or close laptop lid, the system hangs for about 5 minutes (sometimes until X server restart).

When it happens I see the last picture on display and mouse pointer goes very slowly. After 5 minutes, system continues working and KDE Display Manager appears on the screen.

During these periods of outage I'm able to switch to text terminals and login there. I checked CPU usage and see that nothing uses it.

Could someone tell me where should I look or which additional information should I provide?

I'll post "ps -elf" output when I get the same problem next time.

Which graphics system do you have, and which driver are you using?

Also, try to look at your kernel outptut ("dmesg") when hangs occur to see whether it's a down the stack problem (I have similar problems on my Radeon card with the latest FOSS Drivers). Also it would be helpful to check ~/.xsession-errors when hangs occur.

Hi einar, thank you for the quick reply! I'll check the sources which you indicated once I have the same problem again.

As for graphics system (from official documentation):
Chipset: Intel GE45 Express Chipset with ICH9M
Graphics: Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

I use i915 driver:
Code: Select all
$ lsmod | grep video
video                  17149  1 i915

/usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so

By the way, Linux kernel is 2.6.33

A couple more questions:

- Are you using desktop effects?
- If so, is the blur effect active?

Yes, I'm using them, but Blur is not enabled. The following effects are enabled:

- Track Mouse
- Zoom
- Fade
- Highlight Window
- Login
- Logout
- Scale in
- Shadow
- Sliding popups
- Taskbar Thumbnails
- Transfluency
- Wobbly Windows
- Dialog Parent
- Box Switch
- Desktop Cube
- Desktop Cube Animation
- Desktop Grid
- Present Windows

The problem didn't appear again so for, but I'm sure it will

If it does appear again, try disabling effects temporarily and see whether the situation improves.

It appeared again. It appears every time I change configuration of monitors. For example, at office I use 2 external monitors (extending desktop to both of them). When at home, I use my laptop without external monitors, so just main laptop display.

When come to the office, load my system and try to change configuration with xrandr, it hangs. When I then come home and just boot the system, it hangs again. So as I said, each time I change configuration of available monitors.

I looked at dmesg and xsession_errors, but there are no errors. The only thing I can see in xsession_errors is that there are a lot of messages:
kglobalaccel(1723) GlobalShortcutsRegistry::registerKey: Registering key
kglobalaccel(1723) GlobalShortcutsRegistry::unregisterKey: Unregistering key

and they're repeating. So, it registers all keys, then unregisters, then registers again and so on (about 12 times)

If you press Alt + Shift + F12 to disable compositing, does it unfreeze?

If you change your display mode state with compositing disabled does it have any effect?

Sorry for the late response - for some reason e-mail notifications weren't delivered, I didn't know about replies

Just tried disabling compositing before applying settings. No difference.

Still with the latest system updates, it freezes for less time (10 seconds instead of half a minute or complete hang of X). The problem still exists, but less annoying.
