Following a system crash, I had to re-install openSUSE/KDE. Some of the desktop icons were OK as soon as I restored my /home directory. For others, I selected Properties from the menu gotten by right-clicking an icon's field, then left-clicking on the icon field in the Properties window, and finally searching for and selecting the appropriate icon from the browser window that opens. This procedure allowed me to restore all my icons but the following three.
The Thunderbird icon is a sheet of paper - but briefly displays the Thunderbird icon when clicked. Scid - a chess PGN front-end - is blank but like Thunderbird, shows the correct icon briefly when clicked. The third is a folder named More. It is displayed correctly but a hovering pointer no longer shows a preview of it's contents and it doesn't open when left clicked. How to fix these? |

Do you have previews enabled for text files? Make sure that is off.

Doubt it. Where would I check? |

In dolphin settings go to general->previews and make sure both "Desktop Files" and "Text Files" are unchecked.

Neither was checked. I don't use Dolphin, but it displays all the icons correctly. The behavior I'm complaining about is in the default plasma window. |

Try executing "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" and removing /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/ outside of KDE. The icon cache could be corrupted.

Thanks bcooksley! After running the first command, I moved the file icon-cache.kcache from /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/ to my home directory, logged out and back in again. Seeing the icons were fixed, I deleted the old icon-cache.kcache. But the folder 'More' still doesn't open when left clicked or display it's contents when the pointer hovers over it. Any ideas on this? |

Can you provide a screenshot of the folder? Running "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" and logging out of KDE then back in again might have an effect here.

"kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" didn't fix it. Not sure how to attach a screenshot - please advise. But maybe I can describe it well enough for you.
Hovering the mouse-pointer over the folder reveals two gadgets on it's left. I don't think the lower gadget - an upward pointing arrow - is supposed to be there, but I can access the folder contents by left-clicking it. Also, this folder, More, has a sub-folder, Games, which behaves correctly. |

Soon after my last post, I lost functionality of my mouse. I can move the pointer around the screen OK, but most left clicks have no effect. Other mice have the same problem. Could "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" have caused this? Had to write this on another computer. Am really hoping you have a fix.

After several reboots the mouse is working again. But I'm a little nervous now. Maybe I should just leave the 'More' folder as is.

Screenshots need to be uploaded to an external provider such as Imagebin then linked to here.

OK, so I named the screenshot "KDE_screenshot.jpeg" and uploaded it to Imagebin at http://imagebin.org/154076 |

The upward icon will allow you to view the contents of that folder without opening a file manager like Dolphin when clicked.
Have you tried setting the icon for the More folder again?

I deleted the 'More' folder and recreated it and it behaves exactly the same. I also found out that my Trash folder has a malformed URL.
