Hi,
I have Kubuntu 11.04 running on a netbook (Toshiba NB550d, AMD C-50 APU, Rado 6250). After installation I updated kde to 4.7 from the ppa. After that the official fglrx driver (installed through ubuntu driver software) generated some very ugly artifacts. Wrong scaling, flickery display. I just managed to unistall fglrx and then it showed fine again, I now installed the latest fglrx from ati directly (http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Natty_Installation_Guide) and it works now. First off I want to leave this for other users who might have the same problem. Secondly: Should kde4.7 work with the official fglrx or not? Should I file a bug report? Loving Netbook Plasma! |

fglrx is a closed source driver. Hence, little can be done to fix bugs that are in the driver itself or if it doesn't support the X specifications completely (such as what the NVIDIA driver does for XRandR).

The question is if it is my specific hardware that fails with official 11.04-fglrx and KDE4.7, or it fails for any ATI hardware.
We might never know. But in the second case user should be warned of a possible incompatibility. |

Well, first of all, can you try with the "radeon" driver to see whether there are issues or not? This may be a first indication.

Someone on IRC also pointed out a similar problems, on openSUSE. As this is likely an issue with the fglrx driver, you could try submitting a bug report through ATI's driver feedback.

Hi,
with "radeon" the display is correct. According to http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... tion_Guide the (k)ubuntu 11.04 driver is equivalent to catalyst 11-4. With that driver KDE4.7 causes graphics errors. The most up to date from ATI (11-7) is the one I installed manually and made it work. I dont think canonical will do anything about it, as KDE4.7 is not in the official repositories... And ATI won't becuase the newest driver works. |
