Have you tried the autohide option?
Unlock the widgets (rightclick on the desktop). Then click on the right cashew nut on the task-bar.
In the appeared second bar choose "more options" on the right and switch to "auto hide".

Maybe this is a work-around for you.

So im new to KDE4 after mandriva has it with 2009 release.Took me a while to learn the retarded widget system where everything is a widget, and is super annoying when there are glitches in it so some important functions have problems like the one i have having right now.

Anyways i yesterday was installing guild wars and bla bla bla in Cedega. The game locked up, and so i used ctrl alt backspace (and i have noticed before then when you use ctrl alt backspace in KDE4 there always is something missing like mandriva menu or the opera shortcut on the panel and etc) but now when i got back into the desktop, i surprisingly didn't find anything missing. But soon enough when i fire up guild wars, the bottom panel does not hide itself. It doesn't go away.It stays there, unlike before. Its interfering with the game.I try WoW and same result.I try a youtube on firefox and opera full screen and then the buttons get hidden because the panel doesn't want to hide itself anymore. So what's the problem?

*Thanks if you help, and i find KDE4 to have great artwork good job to KDE team, and i would probable love it if this issue was solved, the widget system gets more mature, and amarok 2 doesn't turn into a flop because it 2 sucks, 1 rocks.

*edit* here is a screenshot (i sized it down sorry but i don't want to make it slower for dial up people to read this)
