When I click on an ext4 USB drive that's noticed by Device Notifier, it's mounted as /media/02676150-95a0-45dd-95bb-a419705f28d9. I'm guessing that's the UUID, which is stable and thus a very "safe" mount point, but I'd rather have something simple … is there a way to get it mounted somewhere else? (I guess this is a job for the backend, udev or hal or something?)

in /etc/fstab add a line similar to:

UUID=8B05-40CF /media/500mb vfat defaults,auto,user

obviously changing uuid, mount point, file system type and mount options to what's appropriate for your situation

note: just physically removing the device doesn't remove the mount point in /etc/mtab, maybe clicking the safely remove button in device notifier does - don't have time to test now - Update: the safely remove button does remove the mtab entry BUT if you just pull the device out the entry remains and when reinserted you need to click the device notifier connect button (as it does not automatically connect, probably because of the existing mtab entry) and an n+1 duplicate entry is then added to mtab (the disconnect button only removes the latest mtab entry leaving the previous one(s)), no idea if this will cause issues

ps: no idea how to do this on a multi-user system without access to /etc/fstab

Alright, thanks for the solution. Will vote too, seems like something that should be possible to set for the user …

A faster (and easier) way to do this is to set the volume label. The tool needed to do this varies depending on the file system however.

I've got that idea to, but there is one restriction: Evertime i boot the system without that usb-drive, there is an annoying question if i want to mount the usb drive or to skip the mounting.
Another way is to give a partition a label in gparted f.eg., the auto-mounting can be controlled by gui (system settings)
