Bugs in KDE - who's looking at them

Wed Sep 07, 2011 9:04 pm
I'm new to Linux/openSUSE and KDE. I think it's a terrific desktop environment, however, it has a few annoying bugs.

Being a good citizen, I reported some bugs:

Strange characters appearing in logon box after sleep:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=280429

Today I noticed that after upgrading to KDE 4.7 and applying some updates, I don't get a device notification when connecting camera or external drives any more:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=281527

This one I think is severe enough for immediate attention.

My question: Does anyone look at these bugs? I posted to other Bugzilla's , for example Gnome's Empathy and got an immediate answer.

I have a few more problems. I am using "Activities" and the only activity I use is "Desktop Icons". These icons keep losing their order. Although the sort order on the widget is set to "unsorted" (Folder View Settings, Display, Icons, Sorting: Unsorted) they keep losing their position.

Today I noticed something else peculiar: When I rename an item on the desktop, I get an error message.

Here's an image. I renamed spanish3 to spanish2 and got a messages that spanish3 no longer exists. Frankly, that was the aim when renaming it ;-)

The desktop icons that lose their location are also shown together with the panel that says "unsorted"

Typically it's the maintainer that looks at the reports, in this case it's assigned to "Plasma Bugs List".

The bugs you reported are probably very hard to reproduce (I haven't experienced any of them). Furthermore, it's not easy to debug without more information; it could be something else that causes them, e.g. something in your setup. For example regarding the device notification, do you have the device notifier plasmoid in the system tray?

It's good that you report bugs, but posting them here won't make them get fixed faster (imagine if everyone did it!). However, you can always post in the forum to ask if anyone else can reproduce a strange behavior, and if not, maybe someone can help you to fix it.

Ok, so let's ask: ;-)

Does anyone use "Activities" and has observed strange things with "Desktop Icons"?

I'm not aware of any strange setup. It's a pretty recent installation of openSUSE from a DVD, plus the latest updates.

As for the device notification: There was a notifier in the systray. Now that you mention it, I remember it. Is had gotten lost. Now that I put it back, it's all back to normal. So one problem resolved already. Thanks!

I just tried it (normally don't use desktop icons) and could reproduce Bug 281584, even in 4.7.1, which I find pretty strange (thought it would have been fixed).

Regarding the reordering of desktop icons, I think it's a pretty well known issue that's been reported many times.

One problem with the bug tracker is that the developers easily get overwhelmed. They have to spend a lot of time to manage the reports, e.g. mark duplicates, check validity etc., time that could have been spent on coding instead. If you would like to help out the situation, please read http://techbase.kde.org/Contribute/Bugsquad.

Thanks for checking it out for me, at least it's not due to some weird configuration I have. I like desktop icons, because this way I can make the desktop look pretty much like in Windows (sorry). Or is there another way to display the content of the desktop folder as icons on the desktop. I don't mean "Folder View", that's different.

Before I log a bug, I take a look at whether my problem has been reported. But due to the fact that people state/entitle the same problem in many weird and wonderful ways, the chance to find a bug reporting the same problem is almost an impossible task.

I once worked a little fixing bugs in Thunderbird, and the the Mozilla world, there are people who do nothing else but administer bugs. That's pretty much what the bug squad is about, right?

One other thing: Do you ever use sleep (for the PC, I mean)? If so, do you have it, that it prompts for a password, when the machine wakes up? If so, is there any problem typing in that password?

Not that I know of. The Desktop Icons activity is also using Folder View, by the way, and the problem also affects the Folder View widget.

Exactly.

I only use Sleep on my netbook, and it seems to work fine. Can you reproduce this bug with a new user?

I created a new user and that doesn't seem to have the problem.

Hmm, how does that help me, since I am the first/old user?

That tells you that it's probably something with your local configuration rather than a system-wide problem. Hm. I'm still not sure what the problem could be, though.

For my first user I also use "auto-logon". So perhaps it's getting confused there when it prompt for the password after sleep. I've switched auto-logon off now (in YaST2 on openSUSE), so we'll see what that does.

OK, now I have two users. None of them is "auto logon". When I put the machine to sleep as the first user, at wake-up time, I still get the funny bullets in the password field.
