Hi,

I installed kde on arch linux but when i try to login via kdm, it behaves as I used wrong user details (same with root and root password). But when I switch to console with ctrl + alt + f1, I can login with user and root. Any advice?

Make sure the keyboard settings are correct in KDM (for example, you can try the different keys in the user name textbox to make sure they produce the correct characters). Do you have any special characters in your user name/password?

There's no special characters and I'm newbie.

Config file of the kdm is /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc ?

this won't solve your problem but should get you into KDE

alt+ctl+F1 -> login as user -> startx

that doesn't sound like KDE, try the command startkde and if that doesn't work try the command startx kde

is this a new install or did you have a different environment earlier (Gnome, XFCE, ...)?

could it be that KDE did not get fully installed or is corrupt?

what is result of the following following command ls -l /usr/lib64/libkdecore* or ls -l /usr/lib/libkdecore* depending on architecture installed

How do you start kdm - in your rc.conf?

I tried startx kde and saw an error like "The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports" and bla bla.

Yes, as daemon.

All I can suggest is that you go through this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE again as there isn't any proper reason for it _not_ to work. Within that wiki page you also have links to kdm specifically and how to start it. Failing that, check you kdm log and post any wayward entries.

My guess is that nothing is wrong with them but that that your install is at fault here. To get to the bottom of it I suggest you get busy on the Arch forum.
