Splash screen slows down KDE startup

Again on my laptop (Acer Aspire 3680)...

Startup time with splash screen: 13 seconds
Startup time without splash screen: 9 seconds

This is quite consistent. It looks like the splash screen causes some delay...

Is this with or without desktop effects enabled? (There's an effect that kicks in for fade to desktop).

I will also say though that even with the splash screen turned off, KDE's first startup (i.e. after a reboot) is very slow. KDE3 used to start in about 2 seconds after a cold boot.
