Hello,

Last evening I've decided to clean the desktop a bit, to have assigned specific widgets for each virtual desktop, without defining activities.

I am totaled.

Initially, I had one desktop configuration, and I have got 4 virtual desktops with the same config.

When I have checked the option for different widgets on each virtual desktop, I didn't expect to disappear all my icons, widgets, wallpaper settings. Well, they are in the Desktop directory of my user, when I unchecked the option, they all come back, but I would have expected to have the option to keep them at least on one of my virtual desktops.

I would have expected to be possible to copy/cut and paste some widgets and icons from one desktop to another...

I have discovered that on 2nd, 3rd, 4th virtual desktop I could drag some items from the menu and they become widgets, and not simple ... shortcuts.
(sorry, I come from Windows...)

I have noticed that plasma settings widget (in the right corner usually) looks different on the desktops. Sometimes it's a bar, on the upper or right side of the desktop, or it is a quarter of a circle shaped, or some rounded square-like shape. Why?

I have tried activities too, they also clean the desktop and there is a widget to switch the desktop modes. That is also a bit weird to me.

And, as long as the check box was related to widgets, why the wallpapers are affected? Some might want the same wallpaper with different widgets though, without setting again and again the wallpapers.
Also dropping again and again some widgets, reconfigure them when they were already configured is unhandy.
At least some configs to copy would be nice, in a plain text editor, but I couldn't find the documentation for that.

Anyway, I think I have expected too much consistency and the desktop is not yet mature?

BTW, almost forgot, sorry, I use KDE 4.7.1 on Sabayon 6 K.

Am I the one uncomfortable with these? Is there a way to accomplish some of the tasks I have mentioned above in a different way?

And NO, I would not change the DE. I prefer to participate in making it better than give upon it :).

Regards,
Mike

Personally I dislike this option as it doesn't make much sense now that we have activities (in my opinion). But anyway:

I don't use the option myself so I'm not sure how it works, but you can try to create 3 activities (so you have 4) before checking this option and see if it still happens.

I would have expected to be possible to copy/cut and paste some widgets and icons from one desktop to another...

If the thing above works, you can clone your current activity in the activity manager.

I have discovered that on 2nd, 3rd, 4th virtual desktop I could drag some items from the menu and they become widgets, and not simple ... shortcuts.

You need to set the desktop layout to Folder View if you want a traditional desktop. Click on the toolbox -> Desktop Settings -> Layout: Folder View.

I have noticed that plasma settings widget (in the right corner usually) looks different on the desktops. Sometimes it's a bar, on the upper or right side of the desktop, or it is a quarter of a circle shaped, or some rounded square-like shape. Why?

You can drag them around (when widgets are unlocked). Corner = without text.

I have tried activities too, they also clean the desktop and there is a widget to switch the desktop modes. That is also a bit weird to me.

Because what you essentially do with the option is to assign one activity to each virtual desktop. Activities include your wallpaper, desktop and the widgets on it (and also the windows). This is a feature many users have requested - different wallpaper on different virtual desktops.

Anyway, I think I have expected too much consistency and the desktop is not yet mature?

If you want to help, you can see if a bug has been reported on http://bugs.kde.org, and if not, report it there with a step-by-step guide how to reproduce it.

I guess this is the price to making all people happy... Confusing also.

If the thing above works, you can clone your current activity in the activity manager.

Maybe if I set the desktop layout to Folder View, as you say.

... you can clone your current activity in the activity manager.

I would like to clone parts of it, not entirely.

You can drag them around (when widgets are unlocked). Corner = without text.

I am afraid that I can't get how to control it. I will study further :D

I would like to have the virtual desktop oriented as activities regarding the widgets only, not the apps I work with there. Is that possible?

Having each desktop configurable regarding wallpapers it's for sure a good feature, but I don't want that all the time, I would like to easily assign the wallpapers for all the desktops at once.

BTW, why I don't like the widgets behavior on the desktop? Because I can't align them, at least the icons should be. Could it be possible?

Thanks,
Mike
