I don't use them, but that's only because they're so butt ugly and outdated looking. Give me something sexy and I'd use it in a heart beat.

Screen "savers" are a solution to a problem which no longer exists. I think that a proper secure screen-locking mechanism is much more important than some eye-candy of questionable utility.
CRTs are becoming a rarity these days. And even if you use one, low power standby mode is better for both your hardware and your energy usage. Get rid of XSS support. New locking mechanism FTW.

I'm not using it but what if I run my KDE with Compiz or any other Manager? Will screenlock work?

I support it and I wish widgets still can be put on the new locker.

Hope that we will have some new kind of "screen saver" anyway, there are some situations when you don't want to just shut down the monitor, but want to expose some kind of information (company logo, news tickers, just any plasmoid...).
I'm thinking about something like kiosks, and public areas in general, where animations on monitors will catch people attention. I'm also happy to see that this work is used also in Plasma Active. It not means only less duplicate work. We really need integration and coherence between devices (dekstop, tablet, ...).

Well, from user experience point of view KDE4 is still far behind Gnome that we can see in Ubuntu. I am sad that I have to write this because I am using KDE many years and do not plan to switch but if you start Ubuntu with Gnome it is simply WOW from visual point of view. It looks nice since GDM login screen appears (KDM is much much worse looking), when it fades to desktop after login, how the notifications look like, how simply you can set WiFi, integration of IM client, etc., etc. Everything is smooth and nice. In terms of functionality and flexibility KDE is definitely much better from my point of view. I am writing this because I think lock screen is just a very small part of user experience. I think KDE needs a lot of effort to improve overall look and feel not only screen lock. But everything that improves user experience and security is more than welcome. Even if it means we will loose old screesavers, it is worth to do it.

Just make it an optional module, that xscreensaver package. Or don't. CRT days are finished. Also, having screensaver nullifies KDE's ability to put plasmids on lock-screen. That should be top-priority and focus on it. I'd do away with all screensavers and make the lock-screen plasmid configuration replace them altogether.

Everytime is a good time to change! new and better screensavers will appear, I'm sure.

KDM can look however you want it to look, it's completely themeable. If you don't like the default theme(s) shipped with your distribution, look for alternatives on kde-look.org: http://kde-look.org/index.php?xsortmode ... entmode=41 http://kde-look.org/index.php?xsortmode ... entmode=45 And in the future (starting from 4.8 I guess), it will be possible to use QML based themes for KDM, which will hopefully mean even more and better themes becoming available, e.g. see this developer blog post about it from earlier this year: http://sreich.blogspot.com/2011/04/kdm- ... ryone.html
So does KDE Plasma Desktop (at least for me).
A new KDE network management applet is being worked on, e.g. see this developer blog post written yesterday: http://lamarque-lvs.blogspot.com/2011/1 ... day-3.html
Telepathy, the awesome new fully-integrated IM solution for KDE, is shaping up nicely, and should become available to end users in the not-so-distant future. E.g. see this developer blog post written two days ago: http://www.sharpley.org.uk/node/20
KDE already puts lots of effort into such things (see above). That being said, I for one think that KDE Plasma Desktop is already today the most beautiful and pleasant desktop environment out there - and further progress is still going on with every release. If you want to speed up this progress, you need to start contributing yourself (through code, QML themes, QML plasmoids, mockups, or whatever)... ![]() |

I use my KDE machine at home and security isn't something that's important to me. I don't care about the screen locking, or the rigorousness of its locked state.
In addition to work, I want my computer to be emotionally pleasing and interesting, and losing the X Screen Savers would be a hard, hard thing to let go of. Couldn't there be a compromise for someone who doesn't care about screen locking? Like, allowing X Screen Savers yet disabling the XSS once a lock screen is needed? |

Damn, missed the poll…
I would've fallen into the "I would miss them but could live without them"/"Finally new screen savers, thanks a lot" category. Actually, the screensaver I use and have been using for a couple of years now is the "Clock" screensaver, since it's a rather useful way to use your screen when you're not using it. It would be nice if we could keep that one or a new iteration of it if the the new lock-mechanism can provide this

Right, sorry.
You can just disable KWin's screen-blanking/locking mechanism completely, install the "xscreensaver" package from your distribution's repository, and use its window-manager-independent blanking/locking/screensaver-showing functionality directly. The xscreensaver manual gives instructions for how to set it up: http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/man1.html#9 If you don't want to let go of the old X screen savers, and you don't care about secure and pretty screen-locking, and you don't mind configuring your screen savers through the external xscreensaver-demo utility rather that through KDE's integrated system settings, this will probably be the best solution for you. At least until Wayland replaces the X Window System at some point in the future...
As KWin's new locking mechanism will most likely allow showing QML applets / plasmoids on top of the blanked/locked screen, such things should be entirely possible. Both plasmoids and pure-QML-applets for showing a clock already exist, and if there is a demand, many other applets that might be useful (or pleasing or interesting) for this usecase should be expected to pop up in the future. |
