Disabling Plasma Desktop

Tue Oct 04, 2011 4:53 pm
Hi,

I just installed Fedora 15 KDE edition. Although much effort has been put up the plasma desktop, I personally didnt quite like the idea. Let me explain.

Imagine you have a beautiful scenic wallpaper and then you have the rectangular plamsa box covering it ! Is there a way where i can just remove that plasma box and just have icons on the desktop ?

I am a big fan of the GNOME desktop style where there are no plasma boxes on the desktop, but just icons. Also, the windows managers have a distinct solid color title bar. These are the two things I really miss in KDE. I know it might be a little inappropriate to ask in a KDE forum to help me configure KDE like GNOME, but well, nothing wrong in discussing the possibilities.

I need help in configuring the following in KDE

1. Remove the plasma box and have icons directly on the desktop.
2. A solid title bar windows.
3. Mac style solid top bar and a dock below.

As a constructive discussion, I am not blaming KDE, nor am i supporting GNOME [because GNOME 3.0 also doesnt have what I want] The closest thing is XFCE, but I want to give KDE a try before i make a switch to XFCE.

thanks for reading !

Yes.
Unlock widgets if they are locked.
Remove widgets.
Change desktop type (in newer versions it's called "Layout" and is accessible on the first page of the dialog).

Not sure what you mean, but you can change theme in System Settings -> Workspace Appearance -> Window Decorations. If you don't like any of the default themes or the ones from Get New Decorations, you can install binary themes: http://kde-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=75 (preferable use your package manager to install them)

3. Mac style solid top bar and a dock below.

Do you want a global menubar? I'm not very updated on this issue (as I don't like it) but you can try this: http://agateau.wordpress.com/2010/05/10 ... n-windows/

There are different alternatives if you want a dock, e.g. http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Fa ... tent=99737 and http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Da ... ent=102077

I'm moving this to Workspace as it's a question (or rather, three) and not discussion.

1. See this animation. It might be a little different depending on your Plasma version.

2. Change the colors in System Settings. You might need to change to other window decoration style too.

3. Use any of the many docks out there. Icon tasks or http://do.davebsd.com/wiki/Docky

you could also try a plasma theme with fully transparent plasmoids, like the seamless theme. so no plasma boxes would interfere with your wallpaper but you'd still have all functionality of the plasma desktop.

Hi All,

Thank you very much for your responses. I will try these out and post the results :-)

Right now, I am stuck up installing wireless drivers on my Fedora. If anyone has been through this problem, please let me know.

I checked the website and found the drivers. But I need GCC to compile them. GCC isnt available on Fedora by default. So I tried finding GCC in RPMfind.net. When i tried installing it, i ran into failed dependencies. I looked on the GCC website for some installer, but they offer the source and ask me to compile GCC! Now, for some unknown problem in my router, Wired LAN isnt working, so I have to completely rely on Wireless.

So, anyone out there, can they give me the link of a GCC with all its dependancies ? [So that I can download them on my Dual Boot Windows and install in Fedora]

Thanks !

xlordjaguar - please start a new thread for your gcc/wireless issue(s)

you are seeing failed dependencies because you are not installing GCC using the package management tools (Fedora uses Yum and/or Apt) which would resolve the dependencies, assuming you had the proper repositories configured for use.

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Tools/yum
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Tools/Apt

in Apt it would be
apt-get install gcc

in Yum
yum install gcc

Hi All,

I was able to get my wireless working with the help of Wired LAN [The problem with the wired LAN was, fedora somehow didnt recognize the network cable when it was plugged in, but when plugged in BEFORE starting fedora, it worked. So, a simple restart with the network cable plugged in worked. Once wired LAN was up, I compiled the necessary drivers and got the wireless up and running]

I tried whatever was mentioned in the above posts. It was really helpful. I got rid of the irritating plasma box :-)

Thanks All, you have been very helpful. You just made KDE look wonderful :-)
I have a few other issues. I will do some research and if i need help, I would start separate threads, if the threads are not already present.

Thanks again.
