Hey everyone,

this is my first post here and I hope this is the right place for it. I've used the search function here and elsewhere but without success.

I have a serious problem with KDE and am not sure whether it is a bug or whether I'm doing something wrong (which is why I post it here and not as a bug report).

Sometimes after booting Kubuntu, I can't click in any application windows. To be precise: I can click, but without any effect. Not even the top bar buttons (maximize, minimize and close) are working. However, using the keyboard, everything works fine. Thus I guess the applications are not crashed or something. This behavior also does not depend on any specific applications.
Meanwhile, clicking works perfectly for desktop parts like the main panel. I can switch Windows there, open the Application Launcher and so on. Clicking inside the Application Launcher then doesn't work again. But I think this shows that it is not a hardware-related problem regarding my mouse.

Multiple reboots (yep, once isn't always sufficient) always solve the problem.

I am using KDE 4.7.02 on Ubuntu 11.10.

Any suggestions? Any more questions regarding my system? Sadly, as I said I can not reproduce the problem. Sometimes it occurs every day and sometimes it doesn't for weeks. I wouldn't even bet that I have not encountered this problem after running the system for some time, as opposed to after a reboot...

Greetings and thanks for any help,

jhin

id this a clean install or an upgrade?

did it ever not have this problem? if so was there an occurrence that may have caused it? upgrade, system settings change?

does disabling desktop affects help?

does changing your plasma theme help? what theme are you currently using?

It's an upgrade. I've been using the system since at least 1-2 years.
The problem definitely also occurred with the previous version of Ubuntu (prior to the last major upgrade, I think this was from 11.04?). But since I'm having this issue since quite some time (I'd say at least half a year) I can not tell you a fixed date or version or something... it might be an Ubuntu 11 issue or not... I'm really sorry I can't give more information on that point!

Currently I am using the 'Air' theme. I did not have many desktop effects enabled, but to be sure I just disabled the rest. However, I still have no idea on how to check whether it solves the problem.

you could disable effects at startup even, if the problem goes away we've isolated the cause and then look at the graphics card, drivers and kwin config files - of course I don't know how long you would have to wait to declare success. Or set Kwin back to defaults by removing your kwin*rc files in ~/.kde/share/config

with your KDE session not running clean out your cache and temp folders /var/tmp/kdecache-user_name & /tmp/kde-user_name

within KDE run: kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental

erase ~/.config/Trolltech.conf

try a different theme
