How can I display some notification icon in system tray, that would appear separate from the Notification (i) component? I'd like for example a new mail icon to appear there, which in Gnome I used to do with:

zenity --notification --window-icon=/path_to_icon --text="New mail"

In KDE it's being merged inside the Notification component, and separate icon doesn't show up in system tray.

Thanks.

Not sure about standard tools, but I found a very elegant solution using a ruby script wiht Qt bindings:
