Have "activities" replaced virtual desktops?

It seems to me that "activities" are the same as what virtual desktops used to be? Is there any reason to use virtual desktops anymore if you use activities?

Any thoughts are appreciated :)

In short: no. I personally see activities as "higher in hierarchy" than virtual desktops, they provide a way for me to separate my computer activities. However, I still use virtual desktop to organize windows within an activity.

Also, it seems that in KDE the panel shows all applications that are opened across all virtual desktops, which seems to defeat the point a little?
