Please note that it is not necessary to use sudo powers to edit your own configuration files - as you already have write access to them.

iirc, although you can edit the config files manually, that's not really necessary

Kmix > Settings > Configure KMix > check "Volume Overdrive" (Basically what @chuckc is doing) and restart

It _was_ necessary up to KDE 4.12.4.
The possibility to change this in the Settings is new in 4.13.
