could not save properties

Tue Jan 03, 2012 3:02 pm
I was trying to change the icons on the desktop. I would right click on the icon, select properties, click in the icon box, find the icon I wanted, select it, and try to save it. When I do this I get a message that said I did not have sufficient access. I have a screen print but I can't figure out how to post it here.
Here is a list of part of my home directory down to the Desktop entry:

As you can see I own both the directory and the file. The permissions are 777. I was able to change the icon in FC14.

I even tried the same thing using
$ sudo dolphin
and got the same results.

The desktop files are text-type items that contain the info for that item. I opened the file using gedit and changed the icon keyword to what I wanted and saved the file. It worked. The icon is now what I want it to be. This is really weird.

Is this a Fedora bug or a KDE bug?

If you want/need the screenshot, please let me know how to upload it.

Thanks in advance.

Screenshots can be uploaded to sites like Imagebin, etc - then links posted here.

Can you please provide a screenshot of the error message?

Here is the screenshot (I hope).

If this doesn't work, please be more specific about where I should upload the screenshot. I tried to go to www.imagebin.com but it never loaded. Please post the full url. Thanks.

Does your system have any form of Kiosk restrictions in place? This is usually the case when you have a centrally managed KDE installation (corporate, school, etc) not on a personal, home installation.

This is my home computer. It is not centrally controlled and there are no restrictions. I have put my userid in all of the groups including root. If I edit the link file (a text type file that describes the link) using gedit, I can change it and save it with no problems.

It appears you are somehow causing the following code to trip:
Code: Select all
        // If default icon and no .directory file -> don't create one
        if ( !sIcon.isEmpty() || QFile::exists(path) )
        {
            KDesktopFile cfg(path);
            kDebug(250) << "sIcon = " << (sIcon);
            kDebug(250) << "str = " << (str);
            cfg.desktopGroup().writeEntry( "Icon", sIcon );
            cfg.sync();

            cfg.reparseConfiguration();
            if ( cfg.desktopGroup().readEntry("Icon") != sIcon ) {
                KMessageBox::sorry( 0, i18n("<qt>Could not save properties. You do not "
                                            "have sufficient access to write to <b>%1</b>.</qt>", path));
            }
        }

Could you please run "kdebugdialog" and enable debugging + all areas, then open Dolphin and browse to your Desktop folder and try to make the desired changes?

If it trips - please post the full console output from Dolphin here (using Pastebin).

I opened konsole, entered kdebugdialog, enabled Debug, Selected all, clicked Apply and then opener Dolphin. I went to the Desktop directory and tried to change the icon. I got the same failure but nothing in Konsole. Is that where the debugging output should have been displayed? If not there, then where?

Also, have you tried this on your system? If not, please try and see if it works. If it has worked, please post your distribution. I can't believe that I am the only one having this problem. This piece is a request to all who read this. Please try changing one of the icons of something in your Desktop directory and post whether it works or fails. Please post your results.

I opened the Desktop entry with gedit. Here is whats there:

[Desktop Entry]
Comment[en_US]=
Comment=
Exec=/opt/Moneydance/moneydance
GenericName[en_US]=
GenericName=
Icon[en_US]=/home/vince/moneydance/moneydance_icon32.png
Icon=01BA_Readme
MimeType=
Name[en_US]=Moneydance 2011
Name=Moneydance 2011
Path=
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
TerminalOptions=
Type=Application
Version=1.0
X-DBUS-ServiceName=
X-DBUS-StartupType=
X-KDE-SubstituteUID=false
X-KDE-Username=

I have changed this file to reflect the proper icon.

On my system it worked fine. Which distribution do you use? I believe some distributions have sabotaged debug output to ensure it always remains off.

I just upgraded to Fedora FC16. I don't know if this is a Fedora problem or KDE. I have not posted this in the forum there. Should I? Or maybe the Linux Forums? I don't want to get people mad at me for multiple postings.

I take it back. I have posted it on the Fedora forums but have not had any replies from there.

How can I tell if kdebugdialog is working? What can I do to cause something to be captured?

If you have all debug areas enabled, then starting any application - or running "kbuildsycoca4" should cause significant quantities of output to be made to the console.

While trying to see if kdebugdialog was working, I was looking at the kdebugdialog --fullmode and changed a few items at random to send the output to a file. I looked at the file and there was stuff there. Here is a link to that file h t t p ://pastebin.com/cU7D6Gi1 (please remove the spaces in http)

Can you try unsetting your language? For reasons I do not know, en_US appears to be being set as the language key - which should not be the case (as that is the default).
