A new bug reporting system

Fri Jan 06, 2012 10:55 am
I suggest to built in a future KDE version a new generation bug reporting system with the following capabilities:

1. Send a current screen shot by a combination of keys, for example: Meta + PrtScn

After that the current screen is captured and a user is asked to provide comments, like what happens, what program has problem. When all fields are filled in the data is sent to KDE bug server where it is processed by authorized users|developers.

A further development of this system would be to:

Have an ability to start|stop recording the current screen and then send the data to KDE bug server with user comments.

The goal is to make bug reporting system transparent for the community and _exceptionally_ easy to use. Many bugs are difficult to classify, describe and users are reluctant to spend time reporting bugs they see while using KDE. Especially, many of them lack the knowledge and language to describe the problem. It's like describing a surgery not knowing anything about anatomy.

If we were able to advance in KDE bug gathering system the KDE would become very stable quite soon.

As a developer myself I prefer to see a screen shot with system info instead of trying to understand what user tries to tell.

I think if this feature would be a part of KDE (or XORG) we would be able to bring not only KDE but other GUI Linux applications to a new stability level. We might connect to this system all the community developers who contribute with their software so everyone would actually benefit of it.

And this should be as simple as possible for a user, he sees a bug he presses Meta + PrtScn, sees a popup with screen shot, fills in optional comments and feedback e-mail and if there is SCREEN SHOT HAS NO PRIVATE INFORMATION checked presses SEND, alas.

The data comes to KDE back end where it's sorted by volunteers between different developers. For example if a bug is with Krusader then the system contacts Krusader developers, etc. What a time saver for these people this system would be. They try to understand in Bugzillas what was actually meant... It's hard and time consuming.

Actually we have many bugs with interfaces which do not crash KDE or applications and the bug reporting system as it is now not working very well with them.

I'm sure many Google Chrome developers would LOVE to see web pages screen shots where Chrome is buggy. As well as Firefox, OpenOffice and many, many others.

It's not worth building this system in each application but if KDE had it then it would be a large PLUS towards it's popularization.

We might allow to choose part of the screen to send when Meta+PrtScn is pressed.

What a time saver this might be. What do you think?
