Hi,
I'm having the following issue: I recently use an external monitor with my notebook. I want the monitor to extend the screen so I'm using my notebook's screen with the external monitor together. The first time I set everything it worked fine. Until I shutdown my notebook to start it the next day with the second monitor plugged in. I was then confrontated with an entirely empty workspace with my wallpaper as the only visible object (besides the mouse-cursor). I was able to start programs via shortcuts I have set before, but the programs weren't visible; they seemed to be started on another desktop or at least somewhere I wouldn't see them. Lucky for me I had my girlfriends notebook with me so I could start systemsettings on both notebooks and navigate through the settings to set LDVS1 to the primary screen. After this I saw my plasma-workspace, it was kind of broken because the widgets were all messed up and the wallpaper was set to default. I wanted to know if the issue was completely solved so I restartet my notebook again. The issue was not solved, I was confrontated with the same empty workspace. I tried to set up LDVS1 to primary screen again but this time it didn't work! I tried to unplug the external monitor but it didn't work either. Rebooting, doing some stuff - nothing helped, I always saw the empty workspace! In the end I moved my .kde4 somewhere else and restarted kdm which worked perfectly fine with two monitors. After a reboot the same issue with the messed up workspace appeared again so I gave up and decided to ask the community for help! The thing is I can't even start my notebook without an external monitor! There is always this empty workspace and I can't do anything! Starting with a new .kde4 is not a solution for me as I have made many many many configurations on my lovely kde-desktop. Is there a way to fix this odd behaviour? Thanks for reading! --blackdeagle |

I just found out that I can start programs on my empty workspace when I "bring them to front". Luckily I have set a shortcut for this action and I just tried that for fun and it worked!
I can actually see the started programs after I bring them to front. So it seems like the workspace is always on top of all programs? I still cannot see the panels on my desktop, so I currently have no taskbar or a clock... Edit: I found out that the panel is there but I can not see it. Probably because the workspace is on top of everything! I drew this rectangle thing on the desktop to select some files and it seems to get lost on the bottom part of the screen (see this picture) |
