Segfaults everywhere!
So, KDM crashes when I try to focus the username field. Flashes back up, then crashes again without any interaction. I've managed to start KDE by removing KDM and installing GDM and it at least loads up the workspace - using firefox is fine but any interaction with a KDE program will crash the system, sometimes not immediately. System is Kubuntu 11.10 using KDE4.8 from ppa:kubuntu-backports. I usually wait a week to get the newer version but this was reported as a slimmer/faster model and I couldn't see any bad things after 4 days so took the plunge ... regretting that one. example .xsession-errors (see pastebin for full post, http://pastebin.com/kFUxqbW9):
I've tried lots of things to fix it - looking for similar issues in last year or so. Some of them include:
removing libproxy and glib-networking
removing libsoup and gnome-keyring
deleting /tmp/kde-cache, /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER and kdecache-kdm
changing permissions on above to 777
creating a new user and starting up with that user
archiving ~/.dbus/ ~/.kde/ and restarting
removing veromix-plasmoid
removing unity and un-needed gnome packages (to simplify system and rule out curveballs)
removing ksmserverrc & all plasmoids in .kde/share/kde4/services & .kde/share/apps/plasma
removing zeitgeist (responding to .xsession-error log entries)
stopping dbus
removing files from /var/run/dbus/: system_bus_socket and pid;
checked /var/run to /run symlinks
confirmed dbus pid is there when xsession-errors reports can't connect to dbus
reinstalling various things, most of KDE, pythong-dbus, python2.7
et cetera, et cetera, ... you get the idea I think Currently using LXDE (via GDM), installed and ran without any problems. Using GDM to access KDE/plasma or KDE/openbox will load things up to showing the workspace (usually) but then trying an interaction - like clicking the app menu "K" will crash out back to the GDM login screen (if it's KDM then KDM will crash too; also can't change the user on KDM without crashing it). I've got to the point of stopping the DM (sudo services gdm stop). Then I can "startx :0" and in the resulting xterm I do "starkde &>file.log" which yields the following (see pastebin for full post, http://pastebin.com/kFUxqbW9):
Again any interaction with KDE stuff kills KDE (and here also crashes X); Xorg.0.log basically tells me nothing though. Would be most grateful for any suggestions as to what to do now and how to get a working KDE back. Thanks.

Seems like that log was too long for the forum, if you remove it from the post your message will show up.
Unfortunately I can't see what the problem is. Something that can be worth checking is if one of your partitions is full. Have you tried other non-KDE applications other than Firefox?

Everything works except anything that touches KDE - FF, Thunderbird, Chrome, all the LXDE apps (Leafpad for example), Inkscape, LibreOffice ... also I've 5G free on my main partition (which basically has everything; system and homes).
Some KDE stuff doesn't close immediately. For example I can open the desktop settings from the desktop's right-click menu; but then clicking on a background image, for example, crashes out and returns me to GDM. I've been able to open the "nepomuk file indexing controller" in LXDE and turn off nepomuk without causing a crash, but if I open Kate that crashes before it show the window contents (one sees the frame drawn and then KDE segfaults). Similarly if something tries to use a KDE file dialog, that's an immediate crash too. |

Have you upgraded all your KDE packages? If you run e.g. dolphin from a terminal, what kind of output do you get?

Dolphin does surprisingly well, it allows navigation around, shows thumbnails, etc.. If I start from an xterm with "dolphin &> dolphin.log" then I get this output:
Full version - http://pastebin.com/XfwXzGdP
At which point I'm crashed out (from LXDE this is at the moment) and GDM takes over again. Bit more system info: kernel 3.0.0-15-generic (though I've tried with 3.0.0-12 too), Ubuntu, x86_64. |

Ha ha, looks like it's fixed ... now to try and work out what fixed it ...
It was most likely one of these:
removing strigi

removing "krunner", ie plasma-runner, plugins

removing nepomuk files ( using "rm -i $(locate nepom | grep home)" and the same but grepping for "rc$" and doing the same on akonadi files "locate akonad").

removing all files in ~/.config/autostart/

dropping back to kde-plasma-desktop 5.68ubuntu9.2 from 5.71~pre15ubuntu10~oneiric1~ppa1 (ie removing 5.71 and installing 5.68)
I'm still getting a ton of xsession-error output like this:
but nonetheless things are working well. Still haven't tried re-enabling any of the semantic desktop stuff. Only thing I think is screwed up is digikam ... |

pbhj, I am experiencing very similar symptoms (I did not try your GDM stuff as you describe it but if boot in Unity or gnome, it all works ok).
Any luck pinpointing the problem and solution? Anyone else? I've tried what helped pbhj, and it did not work for me. My symptoms are that all kde-related starts with a huge delay, if at all. Now, after cleaning up /tmp/kde* /var/tmp/kde*, and rolling to 5.68ubuntu9.2, I get a crash handler screen at KDE startup saying that the KDE daemon has crashed. ps uax does show kded running though, I guess it respawns. KDE still starts up, after some delays but if I interact with KDE programs, the freezes begin again. Like, it takes 30 sec or so to open a kopete chat window, or toggle online/offline status. Any suggestions, anyone? Oh yea, this all began after I've updated to 11.10 from 10.10 via 11.04. Thanks! |

If it helps, here's an output I get when I run dolphin from a command line. It too takes a while start up, not normal:

Bah, digikam crashing is normal - it usually lags behind the libraries. Anyway, sounds like out of sync mirrors. Hang in there and check the kubuntu forum (kubuntuforums.net) for more detailed info as this is definitely an OS specific problem.
Everything running fine here ![]() PS.: I assume you've done an apt-get update followed by an apt-get upgrade. HTH

KTimezoneD runs as part of KDE Daemon (kded4) so if a KDE Daemon module is misbehaving and causing the process to block up, then KTimezoneD will not be able to reply - which will be what is causing applications like Plasma and Dolphin issues.
Try opening System Settings > Startup & Shutdown > Service Manager, and begin unchecking modules one by one, logging out and in again between each uncheck, to see which one has this impact.
